Grieve Mentioned In Canseco's Book For Something He Didn't Do Let me tell you, ben grieve was a kid who needed to take steroids, Canseco wrote. and How baseball Got Big regarding Pirates outfielder ben grieve http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05054/461532.stm
Extractions: Click photo for larger image. Pirates Spring Training: Pirates Notebook: House set back after shoulder surgery BRADENTON, Fla. Most players would cringe upon learning they were mentioned in "Juiced," Jose Canseco's tell-all book about steroids in baseball. Almost all of them would be intensely curious as to what was written. To his satisfaction, he saw that Canseco accused him only of being misguided for staying away from steroids while both were members of the Oakland Athletics in the late 1990s. "Let me tell you, Ben Grieve was a kid who needed to take steroids," Canseco wrote. "He had a slow bat, slow feet and average ability." Grieve had a few laughs about his inclusion after a round of batting practice at McKechnie Field yesterday, when position players were required to report to Bradenton. "At first, I thought it was good," Grieve said with a wide smile. "He wasn't accusing me of anything. He was saying I didn't do steroids, so that kind of made me look good. But then he said something about the A's doing a favor to my dad by drafting me. It made my dad pretty mad. It made me a little ticked off, too. But, you know, Jose is Jose. That's just his opinion. It's just kind of silly, really."

His dad, Tom, was Rangers general manager. As the youngster matured, from sandlot baseball hero to Texas high school sensation, Ben benefited from daily brushes with talents, theories and tutoring of American League stars, among them Rafael Palmeiro and Nolan Ryan. "It was a huge advantage, learning from the best," the 24-year-old outfielder said Thursday, posing for media cameras, slipping into his new business suit, Devil Rays uniform No. 18.

There are traffic lights, big green signs and maybe some directions jotted down on a piece of paper. Usually, too, we have some sense of where we're going. But is it so for Devil Rays outfielder Ben Grieve? As he enters his sixth full major-league season, the once can't-miss prospect who was an American League Rookie of the Year stands at the crossroads of his career. Behind Grieve are three tremendous seasons with the Athletics followed by two poor ones with the Rays. Ahead of him is uncertainty.

West Michigan Whitecaps - Feature Stories But what you see is what you get with ben. Any grieve fan has already Perhaps because he grew up around professional baseball with his father, http://www.whitecaps-baseball.com/PRESSBOX/FEATURE99/grieve.html
Extractions: Take a personal inventory of the most famous Whitecaps alum yet, Ben Grieve, and you won't find any of the typical things that come with being the second overall pick in a draft. Monster ego? Nope - he's very soft-spoken and level-headed. Whopping contract to pay him handsomely to do a job he hasn't proven he can do on a major league level? Negative - you won't hear any reports that he's sitting out the upcoming season so he can renegotiate his deal. All the trappings of wealth...houses, cars, and other assorted playthings? Let's put it this way - he still lives with his parents during the offseason, and he's driving the same car he had when he was in West Michigan in 1995. However, Grieve does have something that, despite all their talents, many first-round picks never get close to earning: hardware. His 1998 season with the Oakland A's was impressive enough for him to capture the American League Rookie of the Year Award, outpacing Tampa Bay's Rolando Arrojo in the voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America. So, after having such a standout rookie season, does he feel any different?
