The Cubs would be better off with one fewer infielders and keeping Grieve around to pinch hit. Having good pinch hitters or a good bench has never been a priority for Dusty Baker. There really is no use for Jose Macias on the roster. I guess he's your third SS, forth 2b, and forth 3b. Otherwise I don't know what he brings to the table. posted by mdr at 7/20/2005 11:08:00 AM Post a Comment A SABR member since 1998, Matthew Rauseo has written about The Red Sox, The Minor Leagues, Roster Construction and Baseball History for almost as long. Extractions: Main January 18, 2005 Grieveous Career Scanning the list of available free agents today I noticed the name of Ben Grieve. Ben has been a puzzle to me since 1999. He had a great 1998, posting 22 win shares at age 22, his first full season in the majors. He leveled off at the 16-17 win share level for a few seasons, and has been in decline since. It has to be unusual for a player to have his best season at age 22, especially since his only real medical problem was during the 2003 season when he needed surgery to fix a blood clot in his shoulder. Ben's career OBA is .367, but his slugging percentage is an unremarkable .443. He does hit doubles, however. He also hits a ton of ground balls . Maybe that's the problem. His best home run seasons are the two in which he got the ball in the air the most. Still, it strikes me that he should be of some value to a team. He'd be a good #2 hitter. (AL #2 hitters averaged a .337 OBA and a .420 slugging percentage in 2004; NL .337 and .408). A fast artifical surface might help his grounders get through the infield. There aren't too many of those left, however. He seems like someone Toronto should want to pick up for under $1 million dollars. At age 29, he seems worth the risk. Posted by David Pinto at 09:27 AM Free Agents TrackBack (0) Comments I don't know why Grieve has gone down so badly, but I've finally accepted that he's not coming back. He's probably best suited to a career as a bat off the bench now like Dave Magadan or the aging Rusty Staub.

I've received almost 500 ballots (and am still accepting them until Opening Day). I thought it would be a little fun to look at some early returns. For this particular article, it will simply be various lists of the best and the worst, as you fans see them. Notes To qualify for these lists, a player had to have at least 5 ballots for a category. 406 of the 499 players on the ballots qualified. The players who received the most number of ballots were Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Soriano, at 58 each. I rejected 1.2% of the ballots (6 in all) for nonsensical selections. In one case, a fan marked all traits for all players as "1", meaning "poor". Baseball Cards For updates on this or any of my other pages, please visit my blog Welcome to my page dedicated to my former A's left fielder/right fielder...Ben Grieve. On January 8th, 2001, Ben was traded from the Oakland A's to the Tampa Bay Rays. Although, as an A's fan, I will miss Ben, I wish him the best where ever he goes, and will still follow his career. I first remember Ben when he was drafted by the A's in 1994. I soon then received my first Ben Grieve card. On September 3, 1997, the Oakland Athletics called up a 21 year old right fielder from Edmonton. Ben started that night, and proceeded to go 3-4 with three doubles (tying an Oakland record) and 5 RBI's in Oakland's 12-3 win over the Giants. Lucky for me, I was there that night! I've been a big fan ever since.
