I was reading about the multiple surgeries he has to endure which will keep him benched for all next season, and may spell the end of his career. Were these injuries he sustained while playing, or did he fall into a pasta-making machine? The Commissioner 11-20-2002, 06:16 AM I think he may have been washing Jeff Kent's truck for him. I think Jeff Kent's truck should be locked up before it hurts anyone else! 12-09-2002, 03:37 PM Poor Greer. The guy played his heart out for a long time. It's sad to see the fan favorite Pudge go, and lots of fans will miss Greer if he never plays again. I think he'll attempt to come back and might be able to DH some and be a clubhouse guy, but after all those surgeries I can't see him being depended on to play leftfield again. If any of you all got to watch him early in his career, it was fun to watch. Remember Kenny Rogers perfect game? The diving catch Rusty made in the bottom of the ninth? That was awesome. I hope he can recover and spend atleast another year or two with the Rangers. BaseballKent 04-14-2003, 02:04 PM

Extractions: Baseball Fever American League Texas Rangers PDA View Full Version : Rusty Greer Announces Retirement Hammerin Hank 02-20-2005, 07:16 AM Greer formerly announced his retirement from baseball on Saturday, the Dallas Morning News reports. "It's just in the best interests of my family," Greer said. "From the standpoint of health, I just don't know if I can make it through a season physically. But I do know that if I quit now, I'm still at a point where I can enjoy my life and do things with my family." The Commissioner 02-20-2005, 06:47 PM Hey, he gave it all for as long as he could. I would have loved to have seen him make a comeback. There's no shame in retiring a career .305 hitter, though. Good luck in retirement, Rusty!!! 02-21-2005, 09:04 AM Sweet Home Alabama was a great song, but never greater then when Rusty was on 2nd after a gapper. He was a fan favorite, because he WAS what the fans expect from a ballplayer. In the days of million dollar premadonnas, Rusty stood out as one that hustled, always put his team first, and never complained of anything. He had the "awe shucks" attitude that we all long for in a hero.

This is the BaseballMuse take on what's happening in the world of baseball or anything else that is interesting to me at the time. If you're a Rusty Greer fan, Jamey Newberg's Report from today is a must read. Rather than recapping Greer's career (which will be done better elsewhere), let me share with you how I became a Rusty Greer fan. I moved to the Dallas area at the end of the 1993 baseball season. Having grown up in west Texas, I had been a Ranger fan for a long time, but had seen very few games in person. After all, the 7 hour commute to catch a game was a killer. When I moved here, my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) had a friend who worked in the Ranger ticket office. As a result, I had the opportunity to get a primo seat behind home plate from time to time whenever it was left untaken at game time. This was at the old Arlington Stadium, but the team planned to move into their new park the following season. The point is, getting such a great seat to so many games at the end of '93, got me excited for 1994. Greer made his debut on May 16th of 1994. Batting in the 2 hole, he went 3-6 with a homer and 3 RBIs. He played right field because Juan Gonzalez was the team's left fielder at the time (Juando would later switch to right field). His MLB debut came on the road, but his home debut was prophetic. On May 27th of '94, with the Rangers trailing 3-2, Greer drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. I remember Greer have a number of game winning RBIs in a similar manner over the years. Very few players do I remember having so many timely hits. Of course that's how fans remember their favorite players.
