Yeah, he should have taken Ortiz out. And he is being blamed for not using Garciaparra in the final game of the series even though Nomar felt some pain in his previously injured heal. They own a 44-38 (.537) record but by their run differential one would expect them to have won only 45.1% of their games. So surely the difference is caused by the smaller sample of games. Over a full season things will even out, but will the run differential change to fit the record or will the record change to more closely fit the run differential? How many licks

Extractions: Main November 04, 2003 3 (Million) Martinez Lunch Edgar Martinez signed a one-year deal to stay with the Seattle Mariners today. He'll earn a minimum of three million dollars. The two-time AL batting champion had a $4 million base salary this year and earned $3.5 million in performance bonuses. He faced a Sunday deadline to file for free agency. But Martinez wants to finish his career with the Mariners, the only organization he's played for. "I'm very glad everything worked out and I'm coming back for another year," he said. "I think if we didn't reach an agreement, the chances that I'd stay home were a lot greater than I'd play for another team." I used to hear a lot about how players don't stay with one team anymore, but it seems a lot of recent stars had their careers in one city. Here's the list of all players who played at least 12 seasons and played for only one major league franchise: The number of players with one team did go down from the 1970's to the 1980's, and you have to figure in a couple of expansions. But it's not as bad as some people would have you believe. And it looks like Edgar Martinez will be another on the retired part of this list eventually. Baseball Musings: Retroactive MVP? Cubs got punished for not breaking any baseball rule or baseball law. We aregoing to see a lot of players like mike greenwell who rightfully question http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/008367.php
Extractions: Main February 16, 2005 Retroactive MVP? Mike Greenwell thinks he should be the 1988 MVP "Where's my MVP?" Greenwell told the Fort Myers News-Press. "(Canseco's) an admitted steroid user. I was clean. If they're going to start putting asterisks by things, let's put one by the MVP." Mike finished second to Jose in the voting in 1988. Of course, Kirby Puckett was 2nd in win shares that year (Greenwell wasn't even first on his team; Boggs beat him 31 to 30), so maybe we should just revote and give it to the Teddy Bear. Posted by David Pinto at 09:03 PM Awards TrackBack (0) Comments well, in 1988, steroids weren't even illegal. and they weren't banned by mlb, either. so greenwell's remark is just plain stupid. you can't take away someone's award for doing something that wasn't aginst the rules or even the law. Posted by: lisa gray at February 16, 2005 09:28 PM No? Baseball does it often. Roger Maris... punished for playing more games than Ruth... in keeping with the rules. It took years to fix that mistake and give him his full reward. Chicago Cubs, 1984 (I think)... had the better record, should have had a home game in game 5 of the LCS. The game was played in San Diego because MLB wanted a night game. Cubs got punished for not breaking any baseball rule or baseball law. Padres won the series, and Cubs fans still curse MLB for taking away their reward of home field advantage in the LCS.
