Unfortunately, in the grand baseball off-season free agency sweepstakes, that's about all that's left. Juan Gonzalez isn't exactly Manny Ramirez, but he was the nearest thing to a star left in the pool. Then there are those players who weren't free agents but soon will be. Like Johnny Damon. Now, I'm an admirer of Billy Beane in many respects, but trading Ben Grieve and a promising shortstop for one year of Johnny Damon seems a bit steep. Grieve is a better hitter than Damon was at the same age (he's two and a half years younger) and neither of them is much defensively. Sure, Damon is fast, but he's got a weak arm and poor judgment, which makes him just about as useful in the field as the slow-footed, medium-armed Grieve. I thought there must be something in the numbers that would tell me why this was such a great move for Oakland, but I don't see it. Let's see, speedy center fielder turned left fielder with bad judgement and a weak arm. Aha! Oakland finally has that Rickey Henderson clone they've always coveted!

Manny Ramirez is beginning to like it in Boston, because he hit one, too, his over a big green thing in the outfield. On the other hand, if you can't hit a homerun these days in the Major Leagues, then get out and become a housewife or something. This means you, Craig Grebeck! For goodness sake, even the pitcher Mike Hampton hit a homerun at Coors Saturday. Well, everybody and their mothers have hit homeruns in Coors, so Hampton can't be too jacked. But true. Halley's Comet appears every 76 years. A World Series champion in Chicago hasn't occurred in 85 years, at least on the South Side. On the North Side, it has been 94 years. An all-Chicago World Series? Well, it's been 96 years since the Chicago White Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 2. The odds of it happening this year? "Well, anything can happen," says Donn Pall. "I think back about what the odds would be of seeing back-to-back homers off Nolan Ryan by Ozzie Guillen and Craig Grebeck. "But I saw it happen. The odds of (an all-Chicago World Series) would have to be about the same." Now, you might wonder what makes Pall such an expert. Truth is, he's about as good as it gets when it comes to Cubs and White Sox baseball.

Extractions: Former West Valley star shooting for the majors By Rebecca Ray Last year, Brett Bonvechio admired major league baseball players Manny Ramirez, Nomar Garciaparra and Craig Grebeck from afar. Now, the Boston Red Sox players treat Bonvechio like he's one of them. Bonvechio, 18, who attended West Valley College in 2000-2001, signed a six-year, six-figure contract with the Red Sox. The third baseman signed the contract in May, half an hour after the West Valley baseball team won the Coast Conference Championship. In 2001, Bonvechio was named Most Valuable Player of the Coast Conference and Most Valuable Offensive Player in California. He also earned a spot on the All-America team. "He has a world of upside to his abilities," West Valley baseball coach Mike Perez said. According to Perez, Bonvechio is one of the best players West Valley has had in the last five years. The school has had four MVPs, including Bonvechio, and a lot of players have signed contracts with professional teams. Although Bonvechio has yet to play in a major league game, Perez said it wouldn't surprise him in the least if he made the Red Sox major league team. Perez described Bonvechio as a tremendous playera power hitter and worthy competitor with commendable size (6 feet 1 inch, 190 pounds), attitude, fielding skill and a good eye. Even if Bonvechio experiences growing pains, the Red Sox will stick with him, Perez predicted, because he has such potential and will continue to improve.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball alumni will help christen its new baseball field on Sunday, February 2 at the 16th Annual Robert Wing Memorial Alumni Baseball Game. Former Toro great and 12-year major league veteran Craig Grebeck is scheduled to throw out the very first pitch at the new Toro Field. Grebeck became the Toros first-ever First Team All-American in 1986 after leading CSUDH to its first-ever CCAA title and a berth in the NCAA West Regional Championship. He, along with former Toro baseball greats Mike Brocki (2B), Fred Hanker (3B) and Kevin Whalen (1B), helped form arguably the best infield ever in CSUDH history. Grebeck was signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox in August of 1986 and broke into the majors with the White Sox in 1990. It was during the 1990 season that Grebeck hit his first major league home run against Texas' Nolan Ryan on August 10.

Prior to the game, the program honored alum's present from the 1986 squad, which captured the first-ever CCAA Championship in program history. Former greats present from the '86 team included: Fred Hanker, Mike Brocki, Chris Plank, Mike Perryman, 12-year major league veteran Craig Grebeck and former Toros assistant coach Steve Boaz. The ceremonial ribbon cutting followed with both the 1986 and 1994 CCAA championship teams doing the honors along with several CSUDH administrators. All in all, it was a day of great fun, memories and a lot of reminiscing for everyone in attendance. In the game, senior DH Frank Perez went 3-for-3 with a double and two long blasts over the left field wall. Junior Nick Sloey added three doubles while junior transfer Zac Cort went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple. The alum lone run of the game came in the sixth inning on an Eric Martin mammoth solo homerun into the parking lot over the right field wall.
