Extractions: All Baseball. All the Time. Brought to you by the Most Valuable Network. by ruz This week in the 19 to 21 newsletter, John Shiffert looks at pitchers moving between the bullpen and the starting rotation, including Danny Graves, Derek Lowe, and Byung-Hyun Kim. #29, July 6, 2004 By John Shiffert At first glance, this looked like another one of those What Were They Thinking Of? trades. After all, Bedrock had been the Phillies closer for three plus years, setting franchise records for career saves (103 since broken by Joe Table Mesa) and single season saves (40 since broken by Wild Thing Williams and Joe Table Mesa) and winning the 1987 National League Cy Young Award and making the All-Star team on the strength of a 5-3, 40 save, 150 Adjusted ERA season. No doubt, the big guy (6-3, 200 pounds) from Methuen, Mass., could pitch. And here he was, going to the Giants for a back of the rotation starter with a funny delivery and a 3-8 career record and an ERA well over 4 (thats Mulholland), another lefty with a funny delivery who had only pitched in six games in the majors (that was Cook actually, he and Mulholland were both pretty good at hiding the ball during their deliveries), and a third baseman with 10 games experience in the majors. Well, as sometimes happens in baseball, there was more to this deal than met the eye. First of all was the trifling matter that the Phillies just had the Greatest Third Baseman in History retire three weeks before this deal. Hence, with no Mike Schmidt after 17 years, they needed a third baseman in the worst way. (Maybe thats what they got, but, were not interested in Hayes.) Second, the Phillies clearly werent going anywhere Bedrosian only had six saves up until June 18, because there werent many games to save and they needed to try and build up their rotation so how much was a first rate closer going to help them, anyway?
Mike's Baseball Rants: Wilson Art? The Cincinnati Reds The fact that they consider danny graves a starter at all, shows you how desperate they are. David Pinto s baseball Musings Dan Lewis Sports Blog http://www.all-baseball.com/mikesbballrants/archives/006779.html
Extractions: all-baseball.com , part of the most valuable network , presents: This is my site with my opinions, but I hope that, like Irish Spring, you like it, too. by Mike Carminati Wilson Art? Well actually, Wilson has pitched four seasons in the majors and only in 2002 did he pitch over 180 innings (193.2 IP). As far as being a proven starter, he has only started 30 or more games in a season once (again 2002). Lest you think that Wilson improved in 2002, his strikeouts per nine innings dropped by almost two (7.08 to 5.16), his poor WHIP (Walks Plus Hits Per Innings Pitched) went up slightly (1.43 to 1.48), and his strikeout-to-walk ratio dropped considerably (2.29 to 1.66). Add to this that Baseball-Reference.com lists an adjusted ERA for him that is 8% worse than the adjusted average each year, and you get a sub-par pitcher. He is a serviceable fourth starter but no more. So why give him $4 M in this poor free agent market? The Reds are desperate for starting pitching. The fact that they consider Danny Graves a starter at all, shows you how desperate they are. Graves started four games last year. Those are the only four starts in his seven-year major-league career. He was 1-0 with a 1.90 ERA in those starts, but with such a small sample that tells you almost nothing. Athletics Nation :: Danny Graves Officially A Free Agent When danny graves was first designated for assignment 10 days ago, baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2005/6/2/19393/86160
Extractions: When Danny Graves was first designated for assignment 10 days ago, there was discussion on whether or not the A's should attempt to sign him if they could get away with paying him the league minimum. Apparently trade talk with the Rangers and the Marlins fell through, because Graves has cleared waivers and now is a free agent. The Reds are going to have to eat up the rest of Graves' guaranteed salary, which, for the record, is another $6,250,000. Any team that does sign him at this point would only be required to pay Graves approximately $215,000. So the question stands... Should the A's try and land Danny Graves? Naturally he wouldn't be the closer even with Dotel on the DL; he's just too unpredictable and we have Huston Street locked up for that job. But Graves could be a decent member of the bullpen, perhaps working as a set-up man. He certainly has more experience than Reames or Harikkala, and perhaps the A's can give him a chance to rebuild his confidence. The most logical argument as to why we should sign him is his potential to be worth decent money again within a year; if he performs well out for the A's, he could essentially traded away during the offseason for more prospects. Although a possible downside to bringing Danny Graves to Oakland would be that it may appear that the A's were trying to upstage Huston Street. It would look like Graves was bought in as a backup in case Street didn't work out, which might inadvertently affect Huston's performance and increase the pressure on him to do well, or lose

They scored five runs in winning in Chicago Wednesday, but through Thursday in 24 games in May they scored more than three runs in a game just nine times and were 7-17 in the month.
