Graves gave up a solo HR to Sammy Sosa, then the flood gates opened and the Cubs scored 4 more runs in the inning. Graves is still in there and the Cubs continue to get hits. Extractions: Main May 23, 2005 Graves Situation The Cincinnati Reds released Danny Graves today . (Via Reds Reporter , who was on this story yesterday .) I think the fact that Graves was walking two more per 9 than then was striking out had more to do with the relase than the hand gesture. The Reds are bringing up another pitcher , keeping their staff at 13. This would have been a perfect time to trim down. Posted by David Pinto at 05:53 PM Pitchers TrackBack (0) Comments And his fastball is down to 88 mph from 94, before his disaterous season in 2003 when he went into the rotation. Plus he had a non-buyout option for next year at $6.25 million. Releasing him saves the Reds that salary (though they owe him for this year). Extractions: Major League Baseball Graphs The Dirty Details Baseball Graphs Home 2003 Win Shares This is a list of all National League pitchers, ranked by Earned Runs Saved Above Average (ERSAA). ERSAA is a measure of how many runs the pitcher saved, given the number of innings he pitched, relative to the league. It's computed this way: League ERA minus pitcher ERA times innings pitched divided by nine, plus an adjustment for the home park. Lee Sinins uses the same statistic in his weekly stats report, only I believe he computes total runs saved, not just earned runs saved. I've supplied other rate stats, to give a bit more insight. In particular, I've included each pitcher's ERA and Innings pitched, as well as his FIP and associated DER. These are the exact same stats I use in the graphs, and they are defined in detail on the Details page . These two stats, by the way, seem to have about an equal impact on ERA, and they account for about 80% of ERA differences between pitchers. The rate stats are not adjusted for home park. The underlying source for this data is Doug . The home park adjustment comes from Patriot These stats are sortable. Click on the top of the column to sort by that item.

Danny Graves If they didn t know anything else about Reds closer danny graves, most baseball fans would like him for his philosophy about signing autographs. http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/10/23/spt_sptzcol1g.html
Extractions: "It doesn't cost me anything to sign my name. I'll never have people stand in line to pay for my autograph." He did make one exception to his rule, though. Two years ago, Graves was asked to do an autograph session at Newport on the Levee. He asked if the sponsors were charging for his autograph. When he was told that they were, "I told them they'd have to find somebody else." Eventually, he agreed to a compromise where there would be a charge for his autograph, but the money would be donated to charity. As a result, a donation of $2,500 was made to Cleves Community Park, which named one of its fields "Danny Graves Field." Graves, who last year received the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, presented annually to the Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies the giving character of Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, is a strong believer in athletes using their fame and money to make a difference in the community.

Extractions: In the last month, a couple of fascinating articles have been written demonstrating bullpen inefficiencies by the Houston Astros and the New York Mets. Back on May 12th, Dayn Perry over at Baseball Prospectus wrote an article entitled Jimy's Poison Pen , which used some excellent metrics used by BP to show just how bad Jimy Williams was employing his relief pitching corps. Essentially, Mr. Perry showed that Williams could end up costing the Astros as much as 10.5 wins during the course of the 2004 season, which is a tremendous amount of games when you consider just how close the NL Central Division is shaping up to be. It's a fantastic article and if you have a chance, it's worth going over to read.

Baseball BASEBALL NOTEBOOK May 24, 2005 Closer Danny Graves was let go by the Cincinnati Reds yesterday, a day after he made an obscene hand gesture at a fan taunting him over his latest poor performance. ADVERTISEMENT The club's career saves leader was shocked by the decision to designate him for assignment, a move that ended his eight-year career in Cincinnati. The Reds have 10 days to trade him or put him on waivers. Graves gave up five ninth-inning runs in Cleveland's 9-2 victory Sunday at Great American Ball Park, then was booed and taunted by fans as he left the field. Graves spoke by telephone yesterday with general manager Dan O'Brien , who was out of town preparing for the amateur draft. Graves's latest tough outing raised his ERA to 7.76. He was 1-1 and had 10 saves in 12 chances.
