He knows it, the reds know it, and it is clear that all the hitters know it. I really hope he pulls out of this for someone. but the reds are going through a bit of a "Shock and Awe" campaign right now, and they have made the point very clear: We do not care how much money we lose, if you do not perform, we will not keep you around! Will it work? We shall have to wait and see Ravenlord 05-24-2005, 11:07 AM
Serious Baseball: Danny Graves Serious baseball danny graves. by Frank Bundy III May 29, 2005. Itsa shame when a player, any baseball player, makes a mistake that ends up overshadowing http://www.athomeplate.com/sb3505.shtml
Extractions: Why not put Graves in a middle relief role to see if he can revert back to form without as much pressure upon himself? Why not move Ryan Wagner (3.75 ERA, in 24.0 IP), Kent Mercker (2.61 ERA, in 20.2 IP), or even David Weathers (4.44 ERA in 26.1 IP) into the closers role in Graves place? Making any of these moves would have taken some of the spotlight off of Graves, and given him a situation where he could improve upon his previously poor numbers.

Extractions: RECORD: 1-1 ERA: 7.76 SAVES: 10 Reds GM Dan OâBrien : "His performance has been unsatisfactory and unacceptable. It hasn't been up to the standards we've come to expect for the Cincinnati Reds organization. We appreciate Danny's contributions to the organization, and we hope he finds an opportunity with another major league club." Danny Graves : "I always knew this day would come. I didn't think it would be so soon. I changed roles and probably ruined my career. I don't know. I don't have the answers. I felt like I've been given up on. It's a shock to me. If I can recall, I'm not the only closer that has struggled." Reds Fan MungoJer2 : "I have mixed feelings on Graves leaving. He has been a terrible pitcher this year, so I agree that he should not be pitching for the Reds. He should have at least been given an arm exam and sent down to minors. He was hurting the team with his pitching. Graves of course is the all time saves leader for the Cincinnati Reds. Something to be proud of. The Reds though did give Graves more of a chance than probably almost any team in baseball to be a Major League Closer. Graves probably was more suitable as a middle reliever than a closer. But in Cincy he got the chance to close, and had some good years."

Your issue on home grown ballplayers struck me funny. Part of the problem in baseball mediocrity is the scouts . They have a check list for high school and college players and almost never look at players not in the mold. What ever happened to the guy who hits funny but hits .400 or who doesn't blow the ball by batters but wins games? Scouts won't give em a second look. Even Wade Boggs sat for five years in the minors because he wasn't a home run hitter. That may have cost him a thousand hits in the bigs. My son is a good example. He isn't tall enough, doesn't throw in the nineties but wins ball games. He was three and zero in the Junior Olympics in Jupiter Florida. He made the cut for the thirty-six who would make up the final eighteen to represent the USA as the USA Youth National Team in Monterrey, Mexico.

ADVERTISEMENT Longtime workhorse Danny Graves often pitched hurt while collecting 182 saves in eight years with the Reds. He earned a ton of money in Cincinnati, but he obviously didn't garner enough respect to be told face-to-face when he was let go Monday. "This is like hitting us all in the head with a shovel," Sean Casey told the Dayton Daily News. "The guys love him. This was a poor way to handle it. It's wrong, just wrong."
