RufioJimmy 07-20-2002, 12:54 AM While watching the Phillies this year my buddies and i have started a game that goes like this: We say a Phillie and we all say what we would trade him for. example: I would trade Doug Glanville for a pack of number 2 pencils. It gets really fun and it's a good way to let your frustrations out, which is especially needed this year with this team. Pretty much the only ones we dont offer in trades are Burrell and Rolen. So while watching the frustrating phillies you can play this game and it'll make the loss alot easier to swallow. The Commissioner 07-20-2002, 01:26 PM So far in this game what has been the least valuable item mentioned in a trade for which ballplayer? RufioJimmy 07-21-2002, 12:51 AM Probably a stick of gum for Doug Glanville. At this point im not sure ed wade wouldn't jump at that trade. We all rag on dougy cause we are all so anxious to see the next Bo Jackson(Marlon Byrd) in centerfield The Commissioner 07-21-2002, 08:38 AM

Extractions: Comments Oy vey Posted by: Mike at January 12, 2004 04:53 PM This one concerns me. Glanville can play center field, and he's got a little bit of speed, and as you point out, he's always good for a witty quote. As long as that's all he gets to do, and maybe start once every few weeks to give Marlon Byrd some rest, this isn't a bad signing (although wholly unneccessary - they're not gold glove calibre, but Ledee and Michaels are capable backup outfielders). However, if Glanville finds his way back into the Phillies lineup, I may personally have to go knock Ed Wade around. Posted by: John Y. at January 12, 2004 05:14 PM This means we'll have to suffer through more Jayson Stark "witty" comments via Glanville. God help us all.

They acquired him from the Rangers on Wednesday for minor league outfielder Jason Fransz and cash. Glanville, 32, will serve as the primary backup to newly acquired Kenny Lofton in center field. His best tool is his speed, but he's merely average in center field and a liability at the plate. Glanville hit .272-4-14 in 52 games with Texas after signing a one-year, $1 million contract as a free agent, but he doesn't walk (.294 on-base percentage) or hit for power (.359 sluggging). His performance is in line with his career totals of .281-56-317 with a .318 OBP and .386 slugging percentage in 1,000 games. Glanville is a high-percentage basestealer, succeeding on all four of his attempts this year and on 82 percent (160-for-195) in his career. He'll be a free agent again this offseason. Fransz, 22, was a 2002 eighth-round pick out of the University of Oklahoma, where he was an all-Big 12 Conference performer. His best attributes are his body (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) and his raw power, but he also has holes in his swing and isn't a good outfielder. He was hitting .262-9-42 in 77 games at low Class A Lansing, with a 67-23 strikeout-walk ratio in 267 at-bats, a .328 OBP and .408 slugging percentage.

Suffice it to say you'll never see a quote like that in Week in Review. Because there are men like Phillies center fielder Doug Glanville. Last Friday, he hit two home runs against his former teammate, Curt Schilling, in Schilling's first start against the Phillies since they traded him last July.
