It looks like Jaha is hurt once again so Giambi may get thise AB's, but Long is never mentioned in CF. Just the immortal Rich Becker. What 's the scoop, A's fans ? Beukeboom 03-14-2000, 01:45 AM From what I've heard, the immortal Rich Becker is going to be platooned with Ryan Christensen this year. As for Long, he apparently injured his shoulder playing winter ball and hasn't quite fully recovered yet. VELCROHIDE 02-01-2001, 10:43 AM What a difference a year makes. Isn't it amazing, how every year something like this happens? Nobody knew Terrence Long would win some rookie honors and Jeremy's bro would be the league MVP. Jeremy is an okay player but he will always be on the fence looking over to see who is up and coming. But hey, some players have made a good living in this role.

VELCROHIDE 10-19-2001, 12:14 PM [updated:LAST EDITED ON Oct-19-01 AT 01:20 PM (EST)]On the day after I heard Jim Rome rip into Jeremy Giambi for not sliding. Saying that on plays of that nature "if you don't slide, you're out!" Reiterating, "Why give the umpire a chance to make the wrong call? If you slide there would be no doubt." While it is usually the accepted belief that if a runner slides he removes all doubt from the umpire's mind to make the call, there are exceptions to the rule. Especially since Posada DID NOT TAG GIAMBI. He missed Jeremy. Really wasn't that close. Judging by Posada's proximity to the plate and where Giambi was how was it physically possible for Posada, a.k.a. Plasticman, to reach Giambi for the tag? Jeremy, as Barry suggested, made the right move because he was not tagged. Sliding would have made it an easier play for Plasticman, ahem, Posada.

Extractions: KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Former major leaguer Jeremy Giambi admitted he used steroids, The Kansas City Star reported Sunday. "It's something I did," Giambi told the newspaper. "I apologize. I made a mistake. I moved on. I kind of want it in the past." Giambi, the younger brother of Yankees star Jason Giambi, signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. While he did not specifically say his brother used steroids, Jeremy Giambi noted a news conference his brother had last month in New York during which he apologized profusely, but did not say why he was apologizing. "If you don't know what he's apologizing for," Jeremy Giambi said, "you must've been in a coma for two years." Jeremy Giambi declined to be specific about his steroid use. He told the newspaper he wants to come clean about steroids and hopes others will do the same. "They're not good for you," the younger Giambi said. "I think we need to reach out and let teenagers know they're not good for your body and not good for your health."

Giambi hit a major league-best 14 homers in July, the most in a month by a Yankees player since Mickey Mantle hit 14 in July 1961. Roger Maris had 13 that month, too. "That's the exciting part about being a Yankee," Giambi said. "Whenever you do anything special, you're joining Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio. That's one of the reasons I came here."

A few years later he cleaned up his act, at least outwardly, signing with the New York Yankees for more than $100 million. After a solid debut in the Bronx, Giambi suffered injuries normally associated with steroid use, and ultimately, after the 2004 season, he admitted that he had used the banned substance. His reputation and accomplishments besmirched, Giambi figured to be one of the marquee casualties of baseball's latest drug scandal.
