Extractions: From the Daily Southtown (Tinley Park, Illinois) last Wednesday after the Twins beat the White Sox 10-2 and went up 11-1/2 games on the Sox with 18 to play. Yes, the American League Central Division title has all but been conceded to Minnesota for a third consecutive season, as a 10-2 Twins victory the Metrodome just about put the final nail in the Sox coffin. "That's fine, let them do their talking and clapping and antics on the basepaths. Minnesota has two World Series banners, but not one came from this group of players. They forget that. I'll be glad to sit back and watch them go one and done (in the playoffs). Our season ends Oct. 3 or whatever it is. So they'll get an extra week in before they're done." And how many World Series banners has this group of White Sox players brought to Comiskey (excuse me, U$$ellular)? How may times times has this core group of Twins players gone to playoffs in the last several years? I thought so.
Extractions: King County Journal It'll take more than one game to judge whether Freddy Garcia has figured out his troubles. But just as larger perspective is required on his comeback, so too is a wide-angle lens needed to view his value to the Mariners' franchise. Garcia looked better in Tuesday's 15-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals, throwing seven innings of five-hit ball. But this isn't about one game. This is about righting the public perception of a player who has been painted in a bad light by Mariners management due to one victory they didn't want to see a salary arbitration win three months ago. There is a belief among many fans and Mariners ownership that Garcia is now one of those vastly overpaid professional athletes. It's a hot-button topic in modern sports. Big contracts alienate fans whenever the perception is that the money is unjustified. In the case of Garcia, M's president Chuck Armstrong and CEO Howard Lincoln made it clear this spring they were upset by Garcia's $6.875 million victory in salary arbitration. With Garcia struggling out of the gate, he became an easy target. Yet is Garcia's current one-year contract really as out of line as Mariners' brass wants us to think?
Extractions: Log in Register Help Freddy Garcia Talk (P.S.: Odalis Will Be a Free Agent Too) by Jon Weisman Dodger Thoughts reader Brian had ESPN's Peter Gammons answer a question in his chat today. Note the apparent contradiction in how Peter addresses the possibility of a Freddy Garcia trade (bold mine). Brian G. (L.A.): Peter, As a Dodger fan I'm anxious to see how DePodesta manuevers at the deadline. Do you think he'll splurge on Delgado/Sweeney or do you see him holding his cards for 2005? Peter Gammons: First, what the Dodgers need is starting pitching. Right now it's spotty, to be kind. If they can get Delgado just for cash, that's fine. I think they will get into the Freddy Garcia sweepstakes because there really isn't any other good starting pitching out there. Eric Storrs, CT: Word is that Schilling might go on the DL with an ankle injury for 2-4 weeks. What do you think the Sox chances of catching the Yankees will be if this happens? Do you see them making a move to grab possibly Garcia or another starting pitcher? Peter Gammons: They won't know until the weekend whether Schilling will be on the DL for about a month.

Extractions: Main June 07, 2005 Steady Freddy Freddy Garcia turned in one of the great performances in the history of Coors Field last night. He allowed three runs, but only gave up two hits and a walk. All three runs scored on a homer to Hawpe in the first. Garcia then retired 22 straight batters, striking out ten, until he was lifted after the 8th inning. The White Sox offense offered plenty of support. The scored nine runs without a lot of power. Konerko did homer, but 11 of the 15 hits went for singles. It's the curse of playing the outfield in Coors; if you play deep to prevent extra-base hits, singles drop in. Play shallow, and the ball is over your head for a double or triple. Posted by David Pinto at 08:08 AM Pitchers TrackBack (0) Comments The fantasy experts said "Never start a pitcher at Coors." Boy am I glad I ignored that advice. Go Freddy go! Posted by: Tommy at June 7, 2005 09:10 AM I'll grant you that two hits and a walk is pretty good at Coors, but is it really worthy of being called "one of the great performances in the history of Coors Field" when one of those hits is a three-run homer? There have been twelve shutouts thrown there, including Nomo's no-hitter, and I'm sure many other good games. How about "One of the best performances ever for a pitcher who allows three runs?" The Baseball Guru - MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION By Craig Tomarkin Mexico, Monterrey Opportunity They love baseball and hosted a MLB game onopening day Dominican Republic, Andujar, Joaquin, Venezuela, garcia, freddy http://baseballguru.com/ctomarkin/analysisctomarkin09.html
Extractions: MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION by Craig Tomarkin It all started when the Montreal Expos debuted in 1969. They made their first and only post season appearance in strike shortened 1981, with a 60-48 record. Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were the team's hitting stars and they managed to beat the Phillies three games to two in the opening playoff series. In Game 5, Steve Rogers pitched a shut out for them against Steve Carlton to win it. They were unable to outlast the Dodgers in the next series though as Fernando Valensuela allowed only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings to beat them 2-1 in a thrilling come from behind Game 5 victory. As of 2002, we are still waiting for them to make a World Series appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays were the second foreign team to join the MLB in 1977. Again, a team from Canada. This franchise proved to be stronger than the Expos. They first made the playoffs in 1985 and again in 1989. The team soon became a force, making the playoffs three straight years from 1991 to 1993. The last two seasons they won back to back World Series, establishing them as the first foreign team to build an MLB dynasty. Who will follow as the next foreign team? Will it be another team from Canada or will another country step to the plate?
