Erickson, 36, who was signed by the Dodgers in January, went 1-4 with a 6.02 ERA in eight starts and thought this would have happened sooner. "I`m surprised it took this long. I`ve only pitched twice since the All-Star break," Erickson said on the team`s Web site. The veteran right-hander has a career record of 141-132 in 13 major league seasons. In 2004 with the Mets and Texas, he was 1-4. He also has pitched for Baltimore and Minnesota. In 1991, he was second in American League Cy Young Award voting after posting a 20-8 record and a 3.18 ERA. Los Angeles also recalled catcher Dioner Navarro from Triple-A Las Vegas, purchased the contract of pitcher Jonathan Broxton from Double-A Jacksonville and optioned catcher Mike Rose to Las Vegas.

Extractions: all-baseball.com , part of the most valuable network , presents: An account of baseball in general and the Los Angeles Dodgers in particular. by Paul Scott The fact that Tracy is making a serious mistake by benching Hee Seop Choi and Antonio Perez so that he can play his superstars Jason Phillips and Oscar Robles* - has been commented on by just about every Dodger blog and, finally, last week even made the Los Angeles Times. Though it should not take much to figure out that a team struggling offensively should not be playing players such as Phillips with his .291 OBP and .677 OPS when a much better option in Choi (.329 OBP and .795 OPS) is riding the pine, its still fun to try and figure out exactly what cost the Dodgers are paying for such an obvious blunder. Continue reading "What is Tracy Costing the Dodgers by playing Phillips and Robles* instead of Choi and Perez?" Permalink Comments (1) by Paul Scott When Tim Wallach joined the Dodgers as a hitting coach I was, to say the least, under whelmed. His history as a player was pretty much exactly the kind of hitting I did not want to see on the Dodgers. In his 15 years as a major league third baseman, Wallach posted pretty much slightly below average numbers for his position, with occasional years of above average to good play. But he was being hired to coach, not play. There is often a substantial gap between knowing what needed to be done and being able to do it. That is why it was his style of hitting more than the total results that were troubling. He was always a very impatient hitter with a poor eye for the ball. In his 15 years of play, only twice did he manage slightly above league average in taking walks, posting a dismal 7.3% BB/PA(%) for his career. That was the approach to hitting that I did not want to see preached to our young, developing hitters.

Extractions: derisively-intellectual mets chatter Main The Mets have come to terms on a minor league deal with Scott Erickson , just two days after marrying MNF sideline reporter and latino sexpot Lisa Guerrero Once one of baseball's most durable pitchers, Erickson has missed two of the past three seasons because of injuries. He was out in 2001 after having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and was sidelined last year after a shoulder operation. Erickson is expected to be ready for spring training. The Mets are hoping he can compete for the fifth spot in the rotation... This is a no-risk signing, as the Mets haven't promised Erickson anything but a shot at making the team. If he can stay healthy and avoid having his arm fall off again, he can be expected to pitch 200 innings of league average (or slightly worse) ball. Not too bad for a fifth starter making the league minimum. Update: Erickson is apparently excited by the opportunity to pitch in New York. "I wish spring training started tomorrow. I'm ready to go. I know a lot of the guys on the team, especially John (Franco) and Mike (Piazza). I know there's an opportunity for me here, and I'm hoping to make the most of my chance."

Extractions: By Glenn Sacks Baltimore Orioles pitcher Scott Erickson was arrested after an altercation with his girlfriend last weekthe latest example of how police often arrest men who have been attacked by their female partners. According to the Associated Press, the Baltimore police concluded that Erickson's girlfriend Lisa Ortiz: initiated the fight by hurling objects; decided to come back twice after Erickson carried her out of the apartment; repeatedly kicked the apartment door; caused Erickson two minor injuries, one of them to his pitching arm; and herself suffered no injuries. Nonetheless the police, who were operating under Maryland's mandatory arrest law, interpreted Erickson's actions as excessive and are charging him with second-degree assault. Ortiz states that Erickson, who did not pursue her either time after carrying her out, "has never been physically abusive toward me, and in no way do I feel threatened or felt fear from Scott."

Erickson, who was a 2004 TCL All-Star, posted a 3-3 pitching record with a 2.68 earned-run average and had 38 strikeouts in 40-1/3 innings of work.
