2004 Hall Of Fame Inductee Dennis Eckersley A multisport athlete in baseball, basketball and football, for pitchers RickWise and Mike Paxton, third baseman Ted Cox and catcher bo diaz. http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/hof_weekend/2004/inductees_eckersley.htm
Extractions: Born: October 3, 1954, in Oakland, California. Batted right, threw right. All-Star (6): 1977, 1982, 1988, 1990-1992. Dennis Eckersley blazed a unique path as a big league pitcher, one that most likely will never be repeated. He began as a young hotshot starting pitcher, mowing down hitters with a blazing fastball. But years later, when it looked as if he was just another washed up hurler just happy to be hanging on, he was transformed, thanks to his pinpoint control, into the game's top reliever. This success story ends with the game's ultimate happy ending - election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Dennis Lee Eckersley was born October 3, 1954, in Oakland, California. One of three siblings, Eckersley grew up in Fremont, California, where he attended Washington High School. A multi-sport athlete in baseball, basketball and football, the right-handed pitcher was selected out of high school by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the June 1972 free-agent draft. After signing with the Indians, Eckersley began a fast ascent up the minor league ladder. He spent his first two professional seasons with the Class A Reno (NV) Silver Sox of the California League, ending his second campaign with a 12-8 won-loss record, 218 strikeouts in 202 innings, and a league-high tying five shutouts. Eckersley moved up to the Class AA San Antonio (TX) Missions of the Texas League for the 1974 season, where he tied for the league lead with 14 wins, and led the league with 163 strikeouts (in 167 innings) and an .824 winning percentage.

Extractions: Its a little after 6 am on the east coast of America and this morning Im listening to Yankees and Devil Rays playing live in Japan where its a little after 8 pm. This morning Im listening to Devil Rays baseball on WFLA streaming right through my computer via Game Day Audio on MLB.com. The Yanks are now leading 3-1, thanks to a two-run homer by big first baseman, Tony Clark (why cant the Red Sox get players like that?). Its less than 40 degrees (Fahrenheit, for all our friends abroad) here and its grey, its overcast, its raw, its not baseball weather. Yet, when the game is on the radio, somehow were transported to that ballpark. Our minds eye can clearly picture the action and thats part of the beauty of the sport. But its hearing the crack of the bat and the responding roar of the crowd that makes baseball so perfect for radio. Im not that good a typist, so my eyes are open but they could have been wide shut and I could clearly picture Hideki Matsui giving these adoring Japanese fans exactly what they wanted - a huge two-run homer to give the Yanks a 5-1 lead. What other sport is so suited for radio than baseball? What other sport is more reliant on its announcers as a result? Hockey announcers are speed talkers and since goals appear to more a residue of luck than design, it is hard to picture a goal being scored. Basketball is a multitude of shot after shot and has very little time to produce the ambient sound that accompanies an announcer making the call of a Jorge Posada three-run homer that has now given them an 8-1 lead in the fifth. Football, produces a constant hum from the crowd, punctuated by bursts as the play is being run. The nature of the sport enables radio announcers to give analysis of the completed play and suggested possibilities for the next play (unique to the sport).
