DirtDogs is back even sooner than I'd expected. Check out the 2004 calendar over there. Bambino's reader and frequent commenter Deane Crilley joins the blogosphere with his own Red Sox blog: Buckner Was Framed Homework question: What is the difference between a bog and a fen? *link to comment As they say, time flies when you're having fun: It was 4 years ago on our about New Years Day that I scratched down my original spec notes "to create a Red Sox weblog." Makes perfect sense, too, that the idea to start a blog came during this time of year, winter, when the approach of Spring and baseball holds every dream and hope of good things to come. Next year is this year? I don't see any reason why not. As Giamatti might say: Whenever the game is played, our most noble hopes are revived. *link to comment Wednesday, December 31, 2003

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Red Sox By Bob Hohler, Globe Staff, 2/21/2004 FORT MYERS, Fla. Theo Epstein was across the continent toiling for the San Diego Padres in 2001 when Brian Daubach and his running buddy, Trot Nixon, emerged as leaders of the original Red Sox dirt dogs, as then-Toronto reliever Paul Quantrill dubbed a gritty crew of overachievers. ADVERTISEMENT By the winter of 2002, Epstein was phoning Daubach as the Sox general manager to tell the first baseman his days in Boston were over. Daubach received the call while he was Christmas shopping with his fiancee, whom he later married, and he was crushed. So imagine Daubach's surprise when Epstein called him a year later less than eight weeks after the Yankees knocked the Sox out of the American League Championship Series and invited him back. Epstein was working nearly around the clock to complete a complicated deal with Keith Foulke and try to engineer a landmark trade of Manny Ramirez for Alex Rodriguez when he paused to dial Daubach's number. The Sox were looking for a lefthanded hitter they could sign to a minor league deal, and Foulke's agent, Dan Horwits, had recommended Daubach, another of his clients.

Extractions: Did Frank Robinson go to Kindergarten? If you've ever trained a dog or raised a kid, there are a couple of principles to effective discipline you've no doubt already mastered. When you threaten consequences X if puppy/child does unacceptable behavior Y, make sure you always follow through with X without fail. Make consequences X a fitting punishment to deter a future repetition of behavior Y. Make sure consequences X are determined by the behavior of the puppy/child in question alone, so that they fully understand their own behavior is in question, not that of any other puppies/children that might be involved in the behavior. It's a pity the Lords of Baseball apparently have never raised a puppy or a child, since the irrational punishment-behavior cycle of this year's mound-charging fracases appears to have done nothing to deter base-brawls. On the contrary, despite Dean of Discipline Frank Robinson's Darth Vader-like shadow, I contend the current wave of punishment has exacerbated the situation. I 'm not going to get into the issue about the inside part of the plate, however fundamental and extremely important it is to the integrity of the game. (I'll save this for another day, but my argument is that without the inside part of the plate being open to the pitcher, the game will wither and die.)

Extractions: NCAA DIVISION I SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 23) Playing its first game against an NCAA Division I opponent in five years, the McKendree College baseball team held its own in a 7-6 loss Wednesday evening at Saint Louis University. The winning run was scored by the Billikens with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Brad Daubach, brother of current Chicago White Sox infielder Brian Daubach, lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center field to score Johnny Sweeney the winning run. The loss drops the Bearcats to 24-22 overall, while Saint Louis improves to 14-21. McKendree will open a four-game American Midwest Conference series Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Williams Baptist College. Saint Louis jumped in front with two runs in the first inning before McKendree tied the game in the top of the fourth. Freshman catcher Todd Bauer (Centralia, Ill./Centralia) singled with one out and with two outs, freshman outfielder Jay Gajewski (Nashville, Ill./Nashville) reached on a walk. Senior catcher Jason Wiegand (Highland, Ill./Highland) delivered Bauer with a single to cut the margin to 2-1, and Gajewski scored on an error to tie the contest at 2-all.

Extractions: We knew it would happen. We just didnt know it would be this bad. I'm not surprised that the Red Sox wont win the World Series this year. After all, its been that way for 83 years. Theyve lost before, and theyve lost badly. But what we have now is a complete and utter meltdown. From the top down, the entire organization is in complete shambles at the end of what could have, and should have been a season that lasted well into the playoffs. How did it all go bad? There are mistakes, there are bad relationships, bad closers, bad personalities and bad luck. And the Red Sox have all of them. Funny, how it all started with good things Hideo Nomo pitched a no-hitter at Camden Yards in his first appearance in a Red Sox uniform and the teams first win. His no-no seemed to answer a huge question about the depth of the Sox rotation after Pedro Martinez. Then, in Manny Ramirezs first appearance at Fenway Park, he blasted the first pitch he saw well over the Monster, prompting the beginning of his worship by Boston fans as an RBI god. There were plenty of things to be happy about. Even with Nomar, Pedro, Everett and Jason Varitek all doing their respective stints on the DL, focusing on guys like Brian Daubach, Trot Nixon and Lou Merloni allowed us to pretend for a little while that our team wasnt centered around and led by selfish millionaires.

Extractions: The Huskies watch Kevin Millar take batting practice before the game. For the second time ever, Northeastern played the Boston Red Sox in an exhibition game on Friday at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Florida. The Huskies held it close through five and a half innings but the pros scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break it open. Nearly every Northeastern player made it into the lineup before 6942 fans. Justin Hedrick started on the mound for NU and allowed two runs in one inning. He walked the first two batters, but then settled down and got Manny Ramirez to pop up and struck out Kevin Millar looking. Mark Bellhorn and Jason Varitek followed and each hit one-run singles. Hedrick then got Brian Daubach to fly out to center field. Curt Schilling made his first appearance in a Red Sox uniform and pitched the first three innings. After a perfect first inning, senior first baseman Paul Koslowski led off the second inning with a single. It was the first hit given up by Schilling in Spring Training. Koslowski moved up to second base when Schilling threw away a pickoff-attempt a batter later. Schilling then struck out the next two batters. With two outs, Brad Czarnowski hit a single to right center and Koslowski came around to score but was thrown out out at the plate by Sox center fielder Gabe Kapler. Schilling was credited with the win. Matt Morizio led off the top of the third with a single but didn't get any further. Eric Murray popped up and Mike Steinberg grounded into an inning-ending double play.
