Extractions: Jeff Cirillo hit .157 in spring training. PORTLAND, Ore., May 4, 2004 After two troubling seasons with the Mariners, Jeff Cirillo is relishing a stint in the minor leagues as he prepares to join the Padres. Cirillo, 34, is on a rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Portland Beavers, getting his form back after breaking his right index finger on April 5. He has yet to play a regular-season game as a Padre. He batted .157 (8-for-51) in 19 spring training games with San Diego before the injury. Cirillo, who was traded from the Mariners in the offseason, joined the Beavers on Monday and expects to be evaluated in about a week. He was wearing a bandage and small brace on the finger. This is fun playing with these kids out here, he said. Theyre hungry, but theyre still having a lot of fun out there. As the Beavers designated hitter on Tuesday he was 1-for-3 with an infield single and Portland beat the Salt Lake City Stingers 5-3. He was expected to start Wednesday night at first base. As his wife and three sons played on the infield at PGE Park, Cirillo admits the situation in Seattle was such that he probably could not have stayed there, even though his wife is from the area and the family lived in Redmond, Wash.

Extractions: Home Personal About CV ... June 30th, 2003 Last night, I went to see the Oakland Athletics take on the Seattle Mariners at the Oakland Coliseum with Edna, Erik, and Rae. It was the first time that I went to a sporting event at the famed Coliseum. Rae and I drove to Union City and took the Bart over to the stadium. This was way more convenient than braving the traffic up 880 and paying $12 for parking. Cirillo angrily threw his batting helmet back toward the first-base line as he stomped into the dugout and home plate umpire Greg Gibson immediately ejected him. Cirillo briefly went into the dugout then came charging back out toward Gibson and had to be restrained by manager Bob Melvin and shortstop Carlos Guillen . Rae got a kick out of the near-brawl between Cirillo and Gibson. Let the fists fly next time! Answer Guy: Cirillo Wager Isn't Off Base But this wager also left me wondering if cirillo might get in trouble with MajorLeague baseball for betting on baseball, as Pete Rose did. AG Not likely. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/116982_aguy11.html
Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Q: I chuckled at P-I sports columnist Jim Moore's bet with the Mariners' Jeff Cirillo about his batting average, with Cirillo wagering he will hit above .280 or contribute $20,000 to the Humane Society. But this wager also left me wondering if Cirillo might get in trouble with Major League Baseball for betting on baseball, as Pete Rose did. AG: Not likely. Rose was wagering on the outcome of baseball games, which is forbidden. Cirillo's casual wager with the P-I's Go 2 Guy involves only personal performance, not the outcome of games. Plus, it has the potential to benefit a charity instead of a major-leaguer's wallet, the goal pursued by Charlie Hustle. Charity is good. Q: It is sad enough the Average Mariner Fan (AMF) cannot get tickets to Opening Day, but to start it at 2:05 p.m.? That meant AMF couldn't even watch the opener on TV. What's up with this?
