Careers Pittsburgh - The theoretical advantage of having an owner whose brother is a big-deal Hollywood screenwriter is that maybe someone connected with Brewers has a chance of getting an idea advanced. Oh, wait. Here's one: The franchise's all-time leading hitter gets traded, loses his confidence and maybe his game, then begs to return six years later at an age when most players are retired. Expecting to restart his career in the minors, he somehow makes the team. Then he receives a surprise opening-day start , hits a homer and a double and makes a critical defensive play at third. Yeah, right. Like Paul "Donnie Brasco" Attanasio is going to buy that one.
Extractions: Notes: Oh boy, the Rockies are fun. The offensive carnage is a projector's dream. The Rockies offense is very average, about on par with the Expos or Diamondbacks. Helton, Walker and Cirillo are all threats for a batting title. Basically the Rockies have added enough decent talent to their bench and system that most of the guys who might play if injuries strike will put up at least superficially good numbers. I've been a Brent Butler fan but neither of his two organizations have been as impressed. Look for a Baseball Skeptic article sometime this summer concerning Brooks Kieschnick.

This is worse than expected, but not all that surprising. He is another aging veteran whose best years are certainly behind him. I've received almost 500 ballots (and am still accepting them until Opening Day). I thought it would be a little fun to look at some early returns. For this particular article, it will simply be various lists of the best and the worst, as you fans see them. Notes To qualify for these lists, a player had to have at least 5 ballots for a category. 406 of the 499 players on the ballots qualified. The players who received the most number of ballots were Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Soriano, at 58 each. I rejected 1.2% of the ballots (6 in all) for nonsensical selections. In one case, a fan marked all traits for all players as "1", meaning "poor". Extractions: BOX SCORE SCOREBOARD SEATTLE Gil Meche and Jeff Cirillo had each waited a long time for a breakout performance. Meche won for the first time in almost three years and Cirillo went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to break a 1-for-28 season-opening slump as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 13-4 Saturday night. "I had a great time," said Meche, who missed the 2001 season after reconstructive shoulder surgery and spent last year in the minors. "Pitching in Seattle is wonderful. I just wanted to show everyone I could do it and show the fans I'm back." It was a big night for Cirillo, too. When he came up with the bases loaded and one out in the first, Cirillo was hitless in his last 16 at-bats. He lined a shot that hit Ryan Drese (0-1) in the foot and bounced into the infield. John Olerud scored from third to give the Mariners a 4-2 lead and fans rose to their feet in a rousing cheer as Cirillo reached first. "This is a big game for me," Cirillo said. "I totally abandoned what I'd done all spring, a little toe tap and standing straight up. I squatted down lower. All I wanted to do was get a chance where the ball wasn't on top of me."
