West Michigan Whitecaps - Feature Stories Robert Fick would talk about baseball, said Vic of the Whitecaps leading ryan christenson and Tim Kubinski have a chance to crack the major leagues http://www.whitecaps-baseball.com/PRESSBOX/FEATURE98/hostfamilies.html
Extractions: Vic Varnagatas remembers wanting to be a baseball player. He played Little League and eventually high school baseball at Catholic Central and Kelloggsville High School, but the quick-fielding shortstop never realized his dreams of following in the footsteps of Al Kaline and other Detroit Tiger greats. So it's no wonder he beams with excitement every time he talks about his "boys." Fourteen of them to be exact. "I guess I'm living my dreams through them," said Vic, who along with his wife Dar house Whitecaps players annually in the Keep-A-Cap Program. You could say that Vic was one of the first in the area to express interest in the program. When it was announced West Michigan would be getting the Oakland A's affiliate from Madison, WI, Varnagatas started to do his homework. "In the research I did about the Madison team I read that some families in Madison hosted players. I asked my wife if she was interested. She said, 'Sure, why not?' And I wrote a letter to the Whitecaps," Varnagatas said. Like many major league teams, the A's and Detroit Tigers like the host family programs because they allow young players to maintain a home life while playing baseball usually several states away from their actual homes. Because the Whitecaps are a Class A team, the players are usually right out of college or only a few years past high school graduation. Most are not making much money. And it's not easy to find affordable apartments that don't require at least a 12-month lease.

I don't know how you ended up here, but before you check out, go ahead and cruise around. My name is Rebbeca (duh...) and obviously I like baseball. My favorite team is the Oakland A's. They are my hometown team and I love 'em to pieces. People pick on me sometimes because (if you haven't noticed) the A's aren't winning a whole bunch of games.. Well basically those people are just ignorant. Some people just have a hard time remembering the past, or envisioning the future. In both respects the A's kick butt. Just give us three years... We'll be at the top of our division and not long after that the series. Trust me... All you other teams out there, watch your backs. So anyway... You want to know the deal about my website, eh? Okay then. I have two favorite players that play for the A's: Second baseman
