Extractions: Many experts had Chavez tabbed for Rookie of the Year honors before he took a major league swing, but living up to all the hype proved too difficult for the 23-year old third baseman. The lefty with the sweet swing believed the positive press, and didn't work hard enough the first half of the 1999 season, batting only .167 through the All-Star break. Frustrated with his performance, Chavez buckled down, took extra batting practice, and had a strong second half, finishing the season with a .247 batting average and 13 home runs. His improved performance as a hitter earned him the everyday job at the hot corner for the A's where he batted .277 with 26 homers in 2000. There is another theory of how Chavez turned his season around. During his initial slump as a rookie, announcers referred to him as Eric CHA-vez. In an interview with A's broadcaster

I've received almost 500 ballots (and am still accepting them until Opening Day). I thought it would be a little fun to look at some early returns. For this particular article, it will simply be various lists of the best and the worst, as you fans see them. Notes To qualify for these lists, a player had to have at least 5 ballots for a category. 406 of the 499 players on the ballots qualified. The players who received the most number of ballots were Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Soriano, at 58 each. I rejected 1.2% of the ballots (6 in all) for nonsensical selections. In one case, a fan marked all traits for all players as "1", meaning "poor". Athletics Nation :: Eric Chavez Visits Athletics Nation Now, eric chavez. Still to come, Nick Swisher, Huston Street and Ken Korach. They re two of the better pitchers in baseball and it was a panic. http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2005/4/2/14544/39013
Extractions: First, Barry Zito, then Bobby Crosby. Now, Eric Chavez. Still to come, Nick Swisher, Huston Street and Ken Korach. Again, this was a group interview, so not all of the questions are mine. I cut out the first two questions, which were who he has in his Final Four pool and what he thinks of Barry Zito's singing. You'll see a follow up on that Zito one below which sums up Chavy's thoughts in a nutshell. Side note: Chavy got a kick out of the fact that my wife's name (maiden) is Erika Chavez. This is also a fact that the people in the A's media corps find endlessly amusing. As a matter of fact, I didn't point it out to Chavy. One of the media types did. I joked, "I take my A's fanaticism to the extreme." Enjoy! Another media guy: Let's talk about this year. I heard you on the radio after the trades happened and you were pretty upset. Has your perspective changed at all? Eric Chavez: It really has. I was losing two pretty good buddies and it was kind of shocking even though I've lost a lot of good buddies. We traded Frank last year during the season, Jason, Miggy. It even dates back to when Grieve was here. Everyone I've been close to has been sent out of here. It was tough. They're two of the better pitchers in baseball and it was a panic. But Billy has a good enough track record now that we can trust him in what he is doing. Haren looks pretty good. Charles Thomas looks really good. The bullpen looks outstanding. I feel pretty good about it. We'll see how it plays out. We've got some talent, no question.

Extractions: I wanted to throw a topic out there to help out AN supporter Mychael Urban. The A's site is compiling a list of the Top 10 Video Highlights of the season AND Top 12 moments from the second half of the season. Obviously, Kendall's play in Texas, the sulk-off and Kielty's home run off the Goggle Pen make the list. What are the other top moments for you? Scot Shields throw on a Scutaro bunt probably makes the Top 10 Video Highlights. What else? Entry Link Comments Ken Macha did what any player's manager would do. He went out to the mound and asked Barry Zito if he still wanted to stay in the game after 120+ pitches. Zito insisted he was fine and wanted to stay in. I think this was a result of last season's game 161 against the Angels when Zito had said that he was done and pulled himself from a game. He received a deluge of criticism at the time. People said over and over, Zito needs to grow a pair. Well, tonight you saw the residual effect of that game in Zito's psyche. He demanded to stay in the game. Granted, Macha could've overruled him, but that's also how you sometimes lose a player. Zito emphatically asked to stay in. He threw a good pitch to Belliard. It wasn't a hanger. If you've noticed throughout the season that Zito has been left in games whereas someone like Saarloos would've had a quick hook. And Zito has earned that as the veteran of the staff. The analytical side says, take him out there, but you engender the trust of a player when you give them the opportunity to succeed there. Belliard just hit a good pitch for a home run. And honestly, the bullpen hasn't been that much better of late.

But with Harden going on the DL, it's not going get any easier to put some W's together. Bucketfoot Al 05-16-2005, 11:24 AM It does seem to be an annual event now that Eric Chavez gets off to a slow start, then improves around late June or July. My Godson is a big A's fan and his favorite player is Eric Chavez. He asks me if Eric will make it someday to the Hall of Fame. I think all the great ones were April through September players. In order for Eric to have a chance, I think he is going to have to start playing well the entire season, not just one half. 05-16-2005, 01:56 PM I feel bad for A's fans because I thought the A's were going to be below average this year because of shoddy rookie pitching.
