He was among the most recognizable players of his day, noted for his shaved head and thick goatee. He put that recognizability to good cause, as well, hosting an annual Buhner Buzz Night, where fans would shave their heads at the ballpark with the proceeds going to charity. Jay was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2nd round of the amateur draft and was traded shortly thereafter to the New York Yankees . He made his Major League debut on September 11 , appearing in seven games that year. Jay was traded again the next summer, on July 21 , to the Seattle Mariners along with two career minor leaguers (Rich Balabon and Troy Evers) in exchange for Ken Phelps . The trade is often considered one of the worst made by the Yankees of that period, and the best in Mariner history. (This fact was once noted humorously on the television program

Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST Cold weather. Hot weather. Rain or sun. Roof open or roof closed. Doesn't matter. "I'm playing, regardless," Jay Buhner said yesterday with a cat-ate-the-bird grin creeping out from somewhere in the middle of that famous Buhner goatee. As if they were going to be able to keep him off the field. As if there was any chance the Mariners right fielder was going to stay off the grass. On the eve of a historic Seattle sporting moment, after two months on the disabled list with a strained hamstring, Buhner's marvelous recovery comes just in the nick of time. This week, in the wake of an on-field brawl that left Mariners outfielders Charles Gipson and Brian Hunter injured and on the disabled list, Buhner submitted to two rounds of hail-Mary acupuncture sessions and says he's fine. Not 100 percent, but fine. "I've got the green light," he said. "I know it would have been crazy to rush back just to play, but I would have done it anyway." As if there were any chance he was going to say anything else.

Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Joe Oliver walked off the field in Durham, N.C., one day last summer, convinced his baseball career was over. Jay Buhner walked into Lou Piniella's office on the last day of the 1999 season, convinced his baseball career was over. Joe Oliver, who won a World Series ring with Lou Piniella as a Reds rookie in 1990, has a chance to repeat that feat a decade later as a Mariner. Paul Kitagaki, Jr./P-I Both were wrong. And both were never so happy about being wrong. Oliver, the Mariners' semi-regular catcher, and Buhner, the usual right fielder, are at the core of Seattle's success story. With the Mariners one game away from advancing to the American League Championship Series, Oliver and Buhner have been key ingredients of that success. After two subpar, injury-plagued seasons, Mariners right fielder Jay Buhner rebounded this year to belt 26 home runs, drive in 86 and slug at a .522 rate, 28 points above his career average.

Extractions: Baseball Fever American League Seattle Mariners PDA View Full Version : Buhner Buzz Night...And The Legend Lives Edgartohof 08-23-2004, 09:25 PM I was just wondering if any of the Mariner fan's out there particicpated in the Buhner Buzz cut this year, the night before he is inducted into the Mariner's HOF? I ask this because this was the first year I participated (one of my childhood dreams fulfilled), and I was able to spend the day with Jay Buhner. I would like to mention that I did this all at work, so in essence, I was getting paid to get my hair cut (by the Mariner's Moose), get autographs, and talk with a Mariner's legend for 4 hours. I work at a GI Joes in Northgate up in Seattle (just in case anyone in here went there to meet the Bone, you probably saw me). So from this day, I take away an amazing experience, a (free) haircut that will save me from having to pay for any for the next month and a half (yes it is that short), many photographs, and several autographs, my favorite being this huge poster (one of ones advertising the event), where Jay Buhner personally signed it right on the forehead of his photograph.

Extractions: I think the trade for Bone was a classic as well. 12-10-2003, 07:04 PM I picked Moyer for Bragg, but trading a disgruntled Johnson for three prospects that later established themselves as Major League regulars was a great move as well. Houston paid a pretty heavy price for a three-month rental. 01-14-2004, 07:28 PM Y'all got some great discussions in this board ...
