He graduated from Thronton High School in Harvey and the University of Illinois, excelling in sports at both schools. He quickly made a name for himself in the professional ranks, playing his first game with the Cleveland Indians in 1938 and joining the team full-time in 1940 as shortstop. One of Lou's most remarkable on-field accomplishments occurred in 1942 when, at the age of 24, he was named player-manager and became the youngest person to manage a major league team for a full season. In 1948, the Indians, under Lou's leadership, won the World Series. During that season, Boudreau recorded a career high .355 average with 18 home runs, 106 runs batted in, 199 hits, and just nine strikeouts. He went 4 for 4 with two home runs in a one-game playoff with Boston for the league championship that year and was named American League MVP. He was also a seven-time All Star. His number 5 was retired by the Cleveland Indians. Boudreau's baseball career continued with player and manager assignments with the Boston Red Sox and a period as manager of the Kansas City Athletics. In 1958, Lou moved to the broadcast booth for the Chicago Cubs. With the exception of the 1960 season, when he managed the Cubs, Boudreau remained in the booth until 1987. During nearly three decades, he worked with such broadcast legends as

He was 84. Boudreau was brought into St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields on Friday afternoon in cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead there, said hospital spokeswoman Julie Miller. Memorial and funeral arrangements were not immediately available. The voice of the Cubs for nearly three decades, Boudreau teamed with Jack Quinlan and Vince Lloyd in the radio booth in addition to managing the North Siders in the 1960 season. He was also a member of University of Illinois Big Ten championship teams in both baseball and basketball. Boudreau was everything for the Cleveland Indians in 1948. He managed them, played shortstop and batted third. He was the AL MVP, homered twice to win a one-game playoff for the pennant, and most memorably, brought them their last World Series championship. "He was the greatest shortstop I ever saw," said Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller. "He was afraid of nobody. He was a great manager, teammate and friend. Just a great man. There is not a more gracious man than Lou Boudreau."

Extractions: One of the reunion regulars who always greets fans and fellow players alike with a big smile is former A’s first baseman Lou Limmer. Limmer came from a large, athletic family in the Bronx and was a star athlete at Manhattan Aviation High School, also attended by Whitey Ford a few years later. Upon graduation, Limmer joined the Army Air Corps where he served until 1946. His professional career began at Lexington, NC in 1946 and he used his home run power to climb to Lincoln NE. in 1948. At Lincoln in 1948, he hit 28 home runs and batted in 93 runs as a team-mate of Bobby Shantz, Nellie Fox, Earle Brucker Jr. and Bob Wellman who were also future Athletics. That year while sliding into third base, a freak accident took place. Limmer suffered a head injury resulting in blindness fo a few days. He recovered to have an outstanding season, returning to Lincoln in 1949 to hit 15 home runs. 1950 was a banner year for Limmer at St .Paul, MN. of the American Association. His 29 home runs and 111 runs batted in earned him “Rookie of the Year” honors and a promotion to the Philadelphia Athletics for 1951 Once more in 1954,first base proved to be a crowded spot. With the addition of Don Bollweg and Vic Power, Limmer had 316 at bats and managed to hit 14 home runs.Unfortunately,1954 was a difficult year for the Athletics with financial problems ,injuries to key players and the uncertainty about a possible move to Kansas City. When the team moved west,Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau took over as manager and informed the players that sweeping changes were about to occur. Within a few years, only Joe DeMaestri was left and Lou Limmer was among those headed back to the minor leagues. 1955 produced 28 home runs, 16 in 1956, 18 in 1957 and 30 in 1958 for a total of 265 home runs in his professional career.

Extractions: History of the World Series - 1948 Then, in the pressure-packed situation of a one-game playoff for the '48 AL championship, Boudreau lashed two bases-empty home runs and two singles as the Indians routed the Red Sox, 8-3, and won only the second pennant in club history. Boudreau's 4-for-4 performance at Fenway Park backed the five-hit pitching of rookie lefthander Gene Bearden, whose victory in the extra game was his 20th of the year. Cleveland's other big winners in '48, Bob Feller and Bob Lemon, were Boudreau's pitching choices for the first two games of the World Series against Boston's other big-time representative, the Braves, who under Manager Billy Southworth had captured the National League pennant by 6 1/2 games. While the Braves had a good-hitting ballclub, much of the National Leaguers' hopes rested on the arms of Johnny Sain and Warren Spahn. In fact, the formula of "Spahn and Sain and two days of rain" seemed to capture not only the depth of the team's starting pitching, but also the essence of the Braves' strength. Feller, who had won 25 or more games three times in the majors (and 24 on another occasion), was a 19-game winner in '48. Since Feller had broken into the majors in 1936, the World Series wait had been a long one for the 29-year-old Iowan, and the hard-throwing righthander pitched superbly in his fall-classic debut.
