It's free! Save it. DESI RELAFORD HAD PLENTY TO prove entering his first season with the Mets in 2001. A .230 career hitter at the outset of the campaign, the infielder had batted a paltry .215 in combined stints with the Phillies and Padres the prior year. But Relaford rose to the occasion by compiling a career-best .302 average. Relaford's 67-point surge on the batting scales represented the biggest gain among players who appeared in 100 or more games each of the past two seasons.

Mariners Cut Bret Boone The bret boone era in Seattle is over. I ve found that very little happensin baseball unless there is a deadline, Bavasi said. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/231107_boone03ww.html
Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER The Bret Boone era in Seattle is over. The Mariners made that determination Sunday morning when they put the 36-year-old second baseman on the designated-for-assignment list. The classification gives Seattle general manager Bill Bavasi 10 days to trade Boone, release him or send him to the minor leagues. The last is just a technicality. Boone won't be going to the minor leagues, and he probably won't be released. Seattle is looking to trade him. Jose Lopez, who was called up Saturday from Triple-A Tacoma, will be the second baseman. In a second move, pinch-hitter Dave Hansen was put on the disabled list with tendinitis in his left elbow and outfielder Chris Snelling was called up from Tacoma. That move was necessary to get Lopez back in the big leagues. He'd been sent down Friday, and a player has to stay down for 10 days except in case of a roster spot becoming open because of someone going on the disabled list. "I've found that very little happens in baseball unless there is a deadline,'' Bavasi said. "So we're putting a deadline out there to see if we can get a deal done.

The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team): If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.
