Click here to submit your question Wednesday, February 21, 2001 Q: After having a disappointing season last year, what are the chances of Chad Hermansen contributing to the Pirates this year or in the years to come? Brett Latta of Delaware, Ohio MEYER: Chad Hermansen's situation is the question of the week. Perhaps 20 people submitted inquiries about the outfielder, but I picked Brett's question because it's representative and he's from my hometown. Yes, Hermansen was a disappointment last year when he had the regular center field job when the season began. After late May, he spent most of the year back with Class AAA Nashville. And he's a lock to begin this season with the Sounds, too. What people must remember about Hermansen, the Pirates' top draft pick in 1995, is that he won't turn 24 until Sept. 10. He still has plenty of time to make contributions to the Pirates. With Derek Bell signed for two years, Hermansen has an opportunity to re-start his career this season.

Extractions: KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Buddy Bell was awake at 4 a.m., introduced as Kansas City's manager at 2 p.m., and spent three exhausting, tension-filled hours directing his new team against the New York Yankees. By the time the last out was made in the Royals' 5-3 victory Tuesday night, Bell looked almost bleary-eyed. But the adrenaline was still kicking in. "I feel great right now," the 53-year-old Bell said. "I forgot how much you have to pay attention. I loved it, man. Right now, I feel whatever it feels like to run a marathon ... I probably feel close to it." Bell, who last managed at Colorado in April 2002, was not the only one with something to celebrate. The Royals snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the Yankees for just the second time in 10 tries, and run-starved Zack Greinke (1-6) went five innings for his first win in 15 starts. "Everything turned out good," Bell said. "The lack of sleep was worth it."

Extractions: August 23, 2000 August 23, 2000 Yesterday was one of those days that makes you run to the almanac and check to see if it's a full moon. For on August 22nd, 2000, (two cubed, two, two, two, zero zero zero, for you numerologists) some weird stuff happened, despite the moon being waning, three-quarters, and not full. Move over Dick Vitale, it's time for Mound Madness!! The first strange mound appearance of the day was in San Diego, where the Mets were en route to a 16-1 pounding from the Padres. Pat Mahomes, the Mets' "long man", was drafted for an emergency start, but only managed to last four innings and ten runs. You'd think a manager would either let his sacrificial lamb finish the game out, or go straight to the most disposable guy on his roster. Nope: the Mets' manager, Bobby Valentine, uses his best three relievers, Turk Wendell, John Franco, and Armando Benitez, for an inning each. Perhaps he thought a nine-run deficit isn't a lot in this day and age, and he wanted to stay in the game. When the eighth came around, though, and the Mets were still down by nine, he opted to find a sacrificial lamb from his bench to pitch the meaningless eighth. So who does Valentine pull off the mound? Why, none other than his most productive outfielder, Derek Bell. Bell, obviously enjoying himself, manages to get through the inning after another five runs have crossed the plate and he's run a pitch count of 36. Gosh, you think Valentine would've learned a lesson from that fiasco a few years back, when Jose Canseco, the most productive outfielder for Texas and at the time yet a major league star, managed to throw is arm out (torn ligament) in indulging his vanity to pitch in a meaningless game. Ooops...Bobby Valentine

Extractions: Historical Timeline Williamsport, Pa., resident Carl E. Stotz gathers neighborhood children during the summer and devises the first rules and field dimensions for his planned boys baseball program. Little League Baseball is founded by Carl Stotz, who enlists help from others in the community. Mr. Stotz, George Bebble and Bert Bebble, are the first three managers. ... A $30 donation is sufficient to purchase uniforms for each of the first three teams, named after their sponsors: Lycoming Dairy, Lundy Lumber, and Jumbo Pretzel. The first season is played in a vacant lot near the outfield fence of Bowman Field. A new playing site is used near the original field. A second league is formed in Williamsport, modeled on Carl Stotzs pilot program. Rosters are limited by guidelines limiting the area from which the leagues can draw players, a process that continues today. The need for workers and war materiel slow the growth of Little League as the nation prepares for war. The field is taken over for war production, and the operation of Original Little League moves to Max M. Brown Memorial Park.
