Because he had been mis-diagnosed at an early age as having a disease that would lead to blindness, his parents gave him a musical upbringing. Extractions: I think you and I owe Derek Bell , and we owe him big. No, not $4.5 million big ; fortunately for us, the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the hook for that tidy little sum. But we do owe Derek Bell something, because it's men like him who help make baseball the wonderful pursuit it is. Derek Bell is "colorful." He is sorry about this, but let's be honest one of the ugliest men in the major leagues. He used to wear pants so baggy he looked like a clown. And now he's announced "Operation Shutdown," a brilliant plan that will supposedly be implemented if Pirates management comes to the conclusion that they're better off with Craig Wilson and/or Armando Rios in right field. "Operation Shutdown" is now a part of the vernacular, like Garry Templeton's wonderful "If I ain't startin', I ain't departin'." All of which is to say, someday we're all going to remember Derek Bell with great fondness. Without him and players like him, being a baseball fan wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

Extractions: TUCSON Curt Schilling went to the ballpark in Tucson on Monday morning, pitched 4 1/3 innings that afternoon, showered, dressed, and by 3 p.m. was on his way to Phoenix for a team banquet where he would receive a final fitting for his World Series championship ring. He rode in a white stretch limo so long, one passing reporter said, "When the driver reaches Phoenix, Schilling will still be in Tucson." Is there a better way to spend a day? One that does not begin with waking up next to Jamie Sale, that is? That's the way it is for all the Diamondbacks this spring. Everywhere they go, fans insist on describing where they were during that ninth inning. Everywhere they go, fans insist on explaining how much that game meant to them. This is what spring training is like when you're a world champion, though. Walk into the clubhouse in the morning, and your newspaper and breakfast is waiting for you. Walk out in the afternoon and a stretch limo may be waiting to take you wherever you want.

G-spoRts To have even placed bell in the same sentence with those two baseball giants is laughable. So go ahead derek bell, commence Operation Shutdown. http://www.g-sports.net/articles/article9.shtml
Extractions: March 19, 2002 Preparations for Operation Shutdown are well under way. President Bush must be alerted and the military must be aligned in position. It's finally time to take care of the pressing issues in today's uncertain world. No, not foreign affairs. Instead, it's time to go into the tank for Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder Derek Bell. Why, you ask? Well, the Pittsburgh front office had the audacity to tell Bell that his slated right field position was no longer going to be handed to him during spring training. Instead, he will have to earn his position in the starting lineup, like many other ballplayers across the country. Egads! What was Bell's response to this horribly unreasonable claim? Operation Shutdown. Pirates general manager Dave Liitlefield stated that Bell would be in competition with Armando Rios, Craig Wilson, and Rob Mackowiak for Pittsburgh's 2002 starting right field position. Bell was in total disbelief upon learning of the his new circumstances. He was quoted as stating, "If it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going out there to hurt myself in spring training battling for a job. If it is (competition for the starting job), then I'm going into Operation Shutdown." Let me preface my analysis with this profound statement: Derek Bell is a moron. Last season, Bell played only 46 out of a possible 162 game schedule. In that quarter of a season's worth of games, he batted a miniscule .173, with 13 RBIs, 14 runs, and 5 homeruns. How does he have the ego to state, with numbers like that, he deserves a free pass to start? He should merely feel privileged to have a job in pro ball all together. I can hear the cynics saying it now, it's about the money, right? Wrong. Bell signed a guaranteed two year $9 million contract before last season. Whether he starts or not, Bell will get his paycheck. For once, it is truly not about the millions of dollars thrown at athletes. So, what is this nonsense all about, you ask?
