Extractions: HOUSTON - Jeff Bagwell isn't the type who needs motivation. Still, a little extra incentive never hurts - and that's exactly what the Houston Astros' recent surge into playoff contention has provided him in his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery. Bagwell has been out of the lineup since May 4, when he was batting only .250 with three homers in 88 at-bats. When rest didn't alleviate the excruciating pain in his arthritic right shoulder, he made one more attempt to extend his career: an operation in early June to loosen he bones that were rubbing against each other. There were no guarantees that he'd ever play again, much less this season. Now Bagwell is about halfway through a comeback that could rival what his teammates have been doing in his absence. Since sinking to 15-30 in the weeks between Bagwell's last at-bat and his surgery, the Astros have gone 45-21. They went into an off-day Monday with a two-game lead for the NL wild card. "I'm happy with the way things are going, but I wish I was playing," the 37-year-old Bagwell said during the last homestand. "I watch this and think maybe I can help at the end of the season if I can get better. Maybe I can be a boost off the bench."
Extractions: NBCSports.com news services Injured Houston Astros star Jeff Bagwell said it's "50-50" that he will play baseball again, the Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday. The Chronicle said Bagwell's ambivelance is in contrast to last month, when he was more confident in returning. "I was," he said. "Now I know I'm still a long way away. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. I understand that I might not be able to play again." Bagwell has been sidelined since May 4, when he took himself out of the lineup with intolerable pain in his shoulder. He had surgery to loosen the bones in the shoulder, the Chronicle said. Bagwell, who has 449 home runs and 1,525 RBIs, has wrestled with big pain in his shoulder for four years with a degenerative arthritic condition, the Chronicle said. The 37-year-old longtime star of the Astros told the Chronicle he might have to face the reality of retirement. "I think it'll be a little easier because I'm going to stay in the game," he said. "I don't know what I'll do, but it'll be something. Being hurt the way I've been for the last four years, knowing my time was coming anyway, that has forced me to think about it.

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Baseball BASEBALL NOTES May 15, 2005 If this is not the end of Jeff Bagwell's career, it's close enough that we can see it. ADVERTISEMENT Bagwell, who turns 37 May 27, took himself out of the Astros' lineup May 3 after awakening with the worst pain he's felt yet in his arthritic right shoulder. Last week, the Astros placed him on the disabled list, and no one is predicting when he'll back. He was hitting .250 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs, but as a man who has played the last four seasons in agony, even he may have reached the limits of his tolerance. ''Right now we're just hoping that shutting him down a week, two weeks, three weeks will give him some relief," said first-year general manager Tim Purpura, whose team has sunk to the bottom of the National League Central with an offense that hasn't survived the losses of free agents Carlos Beltran and Jeff Kent and is now about to lose its most prolific slugger of the last 14 seasons. ''We're considering another cortisone injection, but understand, Jeff is calling all the shots on this. He has earned that respect, that right. In the last few years, he's consulted with many of the top orthopedic surgeons in the country, and our doctors have talked with them to see what his options may be." Bagwell has been told that he will need shoulder replacement surgery when he is finished playing. Purpura acknowledged that has even been discussed as something Bagwell might do now to continue his career, although the GM called it a long shot.
