Extractions: Baseball Fever National League Washington Nationals PDA View Full Version : The '05 Final Roster? Bob Hannah 03-30-2005, 06:16 PM There is one more spot to fill and the competion is JJ Davis, Tony Blanco, and Carlos Baerga. Davis is out of options and would have to clear waivers for the Nationals to keep him in the system. Blanco is a Rule V guy and would have to be offered back to the Reds if he doesn't stay the full year on the major league roster. Baerga is a nonroster invitee whose better days are far behind him. Bowden seems to lean heavily in favor of retaining Davis and Blanco. Davis needs to prove he can consistently hit major league pitching. Blanco has been surprising this spring, hitting well, but is butcher in the field although some improvement was noted in his play at third base this spring. Baerga will be 38 this year, his last good year was in '95 and he has played sparingly in the preceeding few years. Seems like a no brainer. And seems like this is the direction the team wants to go. Davis may yet fulfill the potential many see in him. Great strides have been made this spring. Blanco has shown he can hit at this level. Both are fairly young, Blanco bing only 23. Baerga looks like the odd man out.

Nor was Vinny Castilla over at third. The lineup looked as if it had been assembled by scribbling names on sheets of paper, placing them in a bin, spinning it around and pulling them out. But this Washington Nationals team has never been about offense, and that didn't change overnight. Instead, John Patterson showed up at the ballpark, his right arm feeling good, his gaze focused. Preston Wilson takes a dive to score in the second inning of Washington's 4-0 victory over the Rockies on Tuesday.

Pérez's bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the 10th plated Luis Ordaz and left Puerto Rico's cheesecloth defense standing on the field to watch another one slip through their hands. "We didn't deserve to win. We gave them to many opportunities to get take it from us," said Puerto Rico centerfielder Hiram Bocachica. Pérez had earlier hit a two-run home run off of Puerto Rico starter Omar Olivares in the sixth inning to give his team a 5-3 edge, and scored the the run that tied the game at 6-6 in the home half of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Luis Rodríguez forced extra innings, delivering a run-scoring single with one out over the outstretched glove of Puerto Rico shortstop Raúl Nieves to score Pérez.
