Mexico got its second shot on Wednesday, and while it again loosened a bolt or two, Dominican champion Licey kept on rolling, edging Culiacan, 3-1, in 10 innings. The victory was the fourth straight for the Dominicans (4-0) and puts them in position to close out their sixth Caribbean Series title in the last eight years. It would be the first time since 1988 that the Dominicans have won on their native soil. They need just one win in their final two games to clinch the title. Licey's performance could hardly be called dominant, however. Three times in this six-game round-robin it has prevailed by just one run. In its last two games it has needed an extra inning.

Two avid baseball fans torture themselves by following their favorite major league squads. Follow along as the Red Sox and Mets inflict pain and suffering on a daily basis. Games 79 through 83 - Mets The Mets, who themselves missed the (dollhouse-sized) window on Baerga by a few years kicked him to the curb as relative refuse seven years ago, and I'm not sure they were wrong. They were, of course, wrong to trade for him and Alvaro Espinoza who led the league only in geeky appearance and give up Jeff (2005 NL All-Star) Kent and fellow journeyman Jose Vizcaino. But if Baerga represents the best good chance the Nats had at clean-up/1B against Pedro, the Mets had to be salivating. And Pedro did indeed shut him down.

Extractions: Post-Season Awards ... Home GOING BACK TO THE SHOW Since its inception in 1998, the Atlantic League has been home to professional ball players both in the early stages of their careers as well as the latter stages. Quiet simply playing in the Atlantic League means different things to different players. The league has seen such Major League players as Jose Canseco, Ruben Sierra, Tim Raines, Jose Lima, Rickey Henderson, Dante Bichette, Pete Incaviglia, Curtis Pride, Carlos Baerga, Jim Leyritz, Brendan Donnelly, Joe Borowski, Jose Offerman, Bobby Hill and countless others. Some of these players were looking for another Major League chance and played in the Atlantic League to stay involved in baseball, while others simply wanted to remain in the game as long as they possibly could. In its seven years of existence, the Atlantic League has served as the home for over 300 players who have Major League experience under their belt, more then 70 in the 2004 season. Out of the 177 players that were sold to Major League Clubs, nearly half (44 percent) were pitchers. This statistic alone is enough to draw in young pitchers and players looking to play baseball for a Major League team. Another 10 percent were catchers, leaving the remaining 36 percent as position players. Nearly one whole team each season have had their contracts sold to a Major League club.

Carlos Baerga, who many of years ago would have been a player that pitchers would have not wanted to throw the ball to and tonight Baerga again came alive 1995 style with a three run shot giving the Nationals a 8-3 lead and what would be all they needed later in the game to take the first game on the road against the Phillies. Ryan Drese got all of the run support he needed to stay in the game or so he thought as the Nationals bullpen continued its woes over the past few game tonight again when Luis Ayala came on in relief and could not find a way to keep the Phillies off the bag. Tomas Perez singled to drive in former National Endy Chavez and make it an 8-5 game.
