Extractions: THE ROOKIE THE ROOKIE (A-1, PG) is a classy movie for the baseball crowd, combining several genres in one delightful sweep of the training table. Prototypes include: bad team underdogs become winners ( Bad News Bears ), older guy comes back to achieve his dreams ( The Natural fathers and sons reconcile under somewhat mystical conditions ( Field of Dreams The Rookie is the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction story of Jim Morris, a high school science teacher in the Texas boonies who at age 35 discovers he can pitch a baseball at 98 miles per hour. Jims dreams of making the big leagues had always been derailed by injuries. But now hes healthy, and he never threw that fast before. But Morris (Dennis Quaid) has a job and a family. You cant eat dreams, says his wife, Lorri (Rachel Griffiths). Hes also coach of a ragtag school team that cant seem to win. Morris challenges his players not to quit and they challenge him right back. Thus, at the movies climax, hes walking in from the bullpen to pitch for the American League Tampa Bay Devil Rays against the Rangers.
Extractions: NEXT STOP WONDERLAND (A-4, R) is one of those starless little films you're lucky to wander into and find your faith in movies restored. Set in Boston (the title refers to a beach resort subway stop), it's a poignant comedy/satire about the singles scene, mostly from the female point of view, often cynical but never quite bitter. It's also a charming love story a touch less Hollywood than Sleepless in Seattle It begins when 30-ish nurse Erin (Hope Davis, attractive and a likely future star) is abandoned by her live-in boyfriend. Her mom puts an unwanted ad for her in the personals. This results in Erin, bemused and bewildered, sorting through tons of suitors. Wonderland , shot in 22 days, demonstrates you don't need a kazillion bucks to make screen magic. A few subplots are strained, but the main characters are delightful. Anderson, 33, offers his follow-your-dream optimism as his response to "the glib, cynical attitude of today's youth culture."
Extractions: TAMPA, FLA Top rated New York Yankees farm team pitcher Jason Arnold will be going to bat for veterans Saturday, May 25, 2002, when he visits sick and disabled veterans at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa, Fla., as part of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Celebrity Entertainment Program. A 2nd round pick (63rd overall) of the 2001 Major League Baseball Player Draft, Arnold's initial season as a Yankees farmhand yielded a 7-2 record, allowing only 35 hits, while striking out 74 and walking only 15. Arnold pitched the first no-hitter in the history of the Staten Island Yankees. He was one pitch away from being "Perfect." In that game Arnold struck out 15 and retired the last 20 batters he faced to put his name in the record books. The visit by Arnold to the James A. Haley VA Medical Center, 13000 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., will be his second as part of the DAV Celebrity Entertainment Program. He joins NASCAR drivers Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler, Major League Baseball Umpires Larry Barnett and Jerry Layne, and others participating in the program. These celebrities generously donate their time to remember the men and women who sacrificed greatly in defense of liberty.

John Roca of Toledo had seen my ad in the SABR Bulletin, asking for help researching "the Joss Game" which evolved into my play Mornings After ; when NOTES started up, John shared with me a list of about twenty "fanzines" the word was new to me and on that list was The Diamond Angle , edited by James Floto, out of Hawaii. Many of the editors I contacted back then, asking them if they wanted to receive NOTES , had already stopped doing their thing. But The Diamond Angle was alive and well, and despite the distance, James and I became friends almost immediately. He understood at once what NOTES was all about. Notes #3 . The first mention I find of James in NOTES is this: FROM THE NOTES ARCHIVE #11, April 25, 1993 WE HAVE A DREAM A Diamond Angle ) brought to mind: we want more time to write baseball. Joe "would like to join forces with other serious writers to make a new dynamic magazine" ... we could, perhaps, "fill a void in the baseball market."

The Loudest Yeller: Book Reviews Just so you know where I m coming from, I loved James book on baseball managers . according to arnold Rampersads superb Jackie Robinson A Biography. http://www.ericenders.com/books.htm
Extractions: I can't think of a way to say this nicely, so I'll just say it: The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract makes me want to vomit. Just so you know where I'm coming from, I loved James' book on baseball managers. I also think his 1988 edition of the Historical Abstract is one of the best baseball books ever published. So perhaps I'm holding him to unfairly high standards. I guess its like the Bob Dylan song High Water As great as you are, man, you'll never be greater than yourself. Still, expectations or no expectations, this book is a huge disappointment. Where to begin? Well, lets start with the books look. Its missing. If you recall, the original edition had some eye-pleasing graphic design, with pleasant little line drawings by James wife. No more. Removed to make room for more words, I suppose. Thats fine, but the books decade-by-decade sections, one of the greatest pleasures of the original edition, have been cut down to almost nothing. Many of the more amusing anecdotes have been removed, but relatively few new ones have been added. The new 1980s and 1990s sections are skimpy at best; blink and you'll miss 'em. James clearly places so little importance on this section of the book that one wonders why he included it at all.

Don Listwin, head of the Listwin Family Foundation, set the stage for the record-breaking evening when he announced a $10 million gift to support the centers Early Detection and Intervention Initiative. Listwins donation makes him the largest private benefactor in Fred Hutchinson history. One in four deaths is the result of cancer. With this donation, I join Fred Hutchinson in its commitment to changing these odds, said Listwin, who lost his mother to ovarian cancer. Listwin challenged the gala audience to make an additional $2 million in direct donations during Help the Hutch, which the sold-out crowd of 850 people eagerly met. Private gifts like Don Listwins are critical to support early detection research, said Dr. Lee Hartwell, president and director. The profound generosity and dedication that Don displayed at the gala is inspiring. This kind of leadership will help us win the fight against cancer.
