It feels like looking at an old snapshot album that actually tells a story. With the strategy of a top manager Sturm artfully mixes Jewish mythology with the mythology of baseball as a way of exploring the myth of America. It's a big subject, and not an easy one. You can tell when the baseball-as-America metaphor gets used as an easy trope by a literal player-hater. But "The Golem's Mighty Swing," has the beauty, universality, thoughtfulness, and sweep of baseball at its best.

Extractions: Baseball writing has been a near constant presence in my life, for almost as long as baseball itself has. I believe the first baseball book I ever read was a long vanished magazine style account of the 1975 Red Sox season, one of those quickie versions usually used to capitalize on success. From that time on, I have probably read hundreds of baseball books, from Roger Angells lyric prose to Bill James keen analytic mind, and either enjoyed them or panned them, but nonetheless devoured them avidly. Baseball writing begins on the large scale, with works like Bill James incomparable Historical Baseball Abstract attempting to cover essentially the entire history of the game, and ends on the very small, with works like Daniel Okrents marvelous Nine Innings covering a single game in a book length manuscript. Literally the only other book I have ever read that dares to take on a single baseball game is Hanos joyous A Day In The Bleachers. Hanos tale is very simple-he begins with an early evening decision to attend Game One of the 1954 World Series between the Giants and the Indians, and ends with the Giants winning and Hano deciding to head back home. As simple as it seems, Hano packs his tale with the details of the day in a beautiful, though partisan prose that truly puts the reader inside the adventure. Hanos book, originally published in 1955, is reproduced for the fans of the new millenium with a new foreword and afterword, but does not suffer for its 50 year remove from the events. It is somewhat surprising, of course, for a 20th century baseball fan to imagine walking up to the box office to see an afternoon World Series game.

The expression has been around for decades, perhaps even before actor James Caan uttered it, unscripted, in his role as Sonny Corleone in the 1972 Francis Ford Coppola epic The Godfather Coppola has joked that Caan should earn royalties on the phrase and when asked where he originally learned it, Caan just shrugs and claims to not remember. Perhaps from his pals from Sunnyside, Queens. The ones who still call him by the childhood nicknames Shoulders and Killer Caan. Regardless, the Oxford English Dictionary has finally made an honest word out of bada bing , adding it to its latest edition and defining it as "an exclamation, a word spoken to emphasize that something will happen effortlessly and predictably." Ironically, there is little about James "Please, call me Jimmy or your Holiness" Caan, the man, or James Caan, the actor, that's either effortless or predictable. He can, in the space of an interview, expose humor and disdain, poke fun at himself or tear down someone else and answer questions with a disconcerting mix of open playfulness or sudden wariness. He is as chameleon-like in his facial expressions, body language and moods as he is in the roles that he's chosen to play in his 40-plus years in the business.
