Few, it seems, expected Jamie Foxx to so totally embrace the role of Ray Charles in the film biography Ray. Few expected Foxx, a classically-trained pianist, to effortlessly nail down the nuances, the voice and the thrills and tears of the great singer's life.

Extractions: Movable Type 3.16 Back to Fiction by KD Cunningham Dr. Paula suggested devising a family ritual as a way to create more intimacy in their relationship. An "emotional bridge" she had called it. A "family building block." Lane had taken notes. Charles nodded like he did at cocktail parties, only his jaw was set, and Lane could see the vein in his temples pulse. "A hundred and twenty dollars closer to fine," he said at the receptionist's desk. It was his little joke. Every week. As far as Charles was concerned, nothing was wrong with the way they had settled into their lives, the way everything had become routine. He seemed to Lane to be comfortable with accepting things as they were. A survival mechanism, perhaps, but it had stirred up something inside her lately that made her feel restless, as if she could never quite get to the place she wanted to be. So, she was surprised when Charles agreed to join her meetings with Dr. Paula. She wondered if he was more invested in keeping her happy than he was in changing things. But six months of Dr. Paula was finally paying off. At least Lane thought it was. She was definitely less of an emotional hostage. Lane had inherited her father's fire, which incarnate in the female form produced a combination of brashness and wit so as to cause most men's hackles to rise. ("Lane, you

Extractions: In Trouble Along the Way (1953), John Wayne plays a famous football coach who is hired by Charles Coburn to turn around a college football team, thereby saving the college from bankruptcy. Wayne accepts the job, but only because it's a way of retaining custody of his daughter from a failed marriage. Originally titled Alma Mater , this was writer Melville Shavelson's first film as producer, and he was less than thrilled to have the experience marred by a serious run-in with Wayne. The issue was the screenplay. Wayne had previously told Shavelson that while he liked the script, he wanted to bring in writer James Edward Grant for a polish - because, as Wayne put it, Grant "has kind of a good feelin' for my way of talkin." Horrified at the thought of any script tampering, Shavelson tried to persuade Wayne not to do this - successfully, he thought. But Wayne went ahead and had Grant secretly rewrite dialogue for several characters. Unable to reign in the biggest star in the world, Shavelson then had the bright idea of shooting two scripts: Wayne's version when Wayne was working, and the "real" version when the star wasn't around.

As a freshman he qualified for the Far Eastern baseball tour because of his versatility and went on to star as a pitcher, shortstop and first baseman for the varsity for three years, captaining the team as a senior. He won both the Wendell Bat and the Wingate Trophy in his sophomore and junior years, the only man ever to win both awards twice. Starred as a blocking back in football for two years, but an injury as a senior precluded an almost certain major league baseball career. A smooth-swinging left handed hitter with tremendous power to the opposite fields, he sparkled for three years at first base, captained the team as a junior and relinquished that honor to a teammate as a senior because he was also captain of basketball. Twice won the Eastern Intercollegiate batting title and the Wendell Bat. Went on to a fine major league career with the Boston Red Sox. A heavyweight no matter in which class he was boxing, he was one of the finest collegiate ringmasters of all time. For four years he fought at all weights from 165-pound to heavyweight, losing only twice. From match to match, he picked the weight at which he would meet the most capable man on the opposing team. He won the Eastern Intercollegiate middleweight title in 1935, lost in the lightheavyweight finals the following year.

Extractions: Fascinating facts about Charles Richard Drew inventor of the Blood Bank in the 1940s. Dr. Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950) was the first person to develop the blood bank. His introduction of a system for the storing of blood plasma revolutionized the medical profession. Drew first utilized his system on the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific during World War II. He later organized the world's first blood bank project - Blood for Britain. He also established the American Red Cross Blood Bank, of which he was the first director. Drew was born on June 3, 1904, in Washington, D.C. A star athlete, Drew acquired , many athletic honors and was the all-American half-back and captain of his Amherst College football team. After graduating in 1926, he spent two years as a biology and chemistry instructor and director of athletics at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1928, Drew enrolled at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he studied medicine and witnessed a man's life being saved via a blood transfusion. He recalled this as triggering his interest in blood plasma preservation. In 1933 Drew earned his Master of Surgery and Doctor of Medicine degrees from McGill and served a medical internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal.

June 3 Charles Richard Drew, the man who developed a method for processing and preserving plasma, decided to study medicine when he "got banged up in football and wanted to know more about how the body works." Who knew the worlds of football and medicine could collide in such a fortuitous way. Friends of the all-American football player said he could have been a professional athlete. In college, his football coach wrote an article about him in the Saturday Evening Post titled "The Best Player I Ever Coached." The world should be both grateful for the sport and relieved he chose medical school over the NFL.

Extractions: "My idol a lot of times is Charles Barkley. I wish I could say what he says," says Wayne Gretzky on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. The approval meter always had two ends and no center, just the way Charles Barkley liked it. You either enjoyed Barkley's rough and tumble basketball style and his shoot-from-the-hip mouth, or you hated it. The wide-bodied forward left no room for middle ground. Charles Barkley, chosen fifth in the 1984 draft by the 76ers, was named to the NBA all-rookie team. His coaches, for the most part, loved him. They marveled at his deft touch, his extraordinary rebounding skills he averaged 10 or more rebounds a game in 15 of his 16 NBA seasons and his clutch play. They learned to live with his outbursts that often led to technical fouls and fines. "With Charles, you've just got to accept the whole package," said his Philadelphia 76ers coach, Jimmy Lynam. "He's an emotional player, and that emotion is what makes him great." Barkley, whose all-star career ended in 2000, rarely saw moderation as part of his game, or his life. He blew kisses to opposing fans while at Auburn and grinned when they'd poke fun at his eating habits by delivering pizzas to the court.
