Extractions: "Don't tackle him," I screamed. "Don't you dare tackle him!" The him in question was Rod Smith. The would-be tacklers were the Seattle defenders. The date was November 26th, 2000. You can still make out the dimly stained patch on my couch where the top third of my beer landed when I leapt to my feet screeching, "Go Rod go!" as I watched Smith carry the ball into the end zone. Here's the curious part: I hate the Denver Broncos. I'm a lifelong Raider fan. My blood runs black and silver, just like Fred Belitnikof's and Art Shell's. So what was there to make me happy about a Rod Smith touchdown? Was it that I had money on the game? Sure, that's part of it; I had a kind of micro-wager on Smith. But there's more to it than that. I had a personal investment in Rod Smith-an emotional tie to him that was a product of circumstances beyond my control. Those circumstances had been dictated months before by an almost random draft order. I had paid a nominal fee of fifty dollars to join a fantasy football league and had taken Smith in the sixth round of the draft. A few years earlier, my brother had paid the fee for me. He had to pay the fee in order to get me to play because there was no way that I was going to throw fifty of my own hard-earned dollars into anything as silly as a fantasy football league. "When I want to bet on football," I had told him, "I'll find someone to take my bet. And I'll bet on a game, not a whole season."

Extractions: By Michael Lewis Lewis on the Cards' Michael Pittman: "If I had to call it, though, I'd say Pittman has earned himself the chance to start for this team and at least take most of the carries in the early going." And then there was one. One more weekend of preseason action to give coaches the chance to decide on their starters? Yes. One more cut-down date for those undrafted and late-round players to squeak through so to earn a paycheck for playing this great game? Also, yes. One person left on that island of "adventurers" who could have, if kept together any longer, made Lord of the Flies look like a romantic comedy? Actually, no. They gave one guy a million bucks, an SUV, and a haircut, and sent everyone home until after the Super Bowl. Why? Because the real game of SURVIVOR is already under way. Thousands of players fighting for about 1,700 jobs. It has 31 tribes, last 22 weeks, and ends with two bands of warriors fighting it out for one title. On the gridiron you get carried off, not voted off, and most of these guys already have a million dollars ... and they play anyway. One week left before NFL 2000's opening weekend? Yes. If you're not there yet, it's time to get pumped.
Ricky's Ramblings: Fall 2001 Archives Their running back of the present was definitely ricky watters. This is greatfor my fantasy football team (I picked him up when watters got hurt), http://www.1122productions.com/ricky/ramble/archives/cat_fall_2001.html
Extractions: December 07, 2001 The End of Another Era It seems another great piece of Ricky memorabilla has finished its tour of duty and will eventually find its way into a museum somewhere. I got a new belt. While that may not seem like something worth writing about, you should know an important fact. My previous belt was bought during middle school. I'm not exactly sure what year I got it, but it was definitely during middle school. I know this because when I bought it, it was ridiculously too big for me. For those of you who don't remember, in middle school, at least at Pizitz, the big thing was those braided leather belts, wrapped around some weird way to where the end actually hangs down. I'm pretty sure it was 8th grade when I got it, because I was usually a year or two behind what everyone else was wearing. I'm not exactly sure what size it was, but as I got older and my waist grew, it began to fit me like a normal belt. The weird hanging down belt faze ended, but the popularity of the braided leather belts has never really gone away. Never being one to get rid of a perfectly good belt, I kept wearing it. And wearing it. And wearing it. I don't want to make it seem like I suffered through high school and college with an old, dilapidated belt. I'm sure my parents would have gotten me one if I wanted a new one. But I just didn't need or want a new one. The belt stayed in great shape all the way through both. I never owned any black pants, so I never really needed any other color belt (until I got my suits, which have their own belt).
Football Digest: Hometown Heroes - The Fans Speak Out I could not believe that ricky watters would get the nod over Chris Warren . watters most certainly had a better overall career in the NFL, http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCL/is_5_32/ai_94767617
Extractions: Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. I would not normally respond to anyone's list of best players due to the fact that most of it is based purely on opinion ["Hometown Heroes," December 2002], but since you knew the debates were coming, I will respond this time. Being a Seattle Seahawks fan since their inception, I could not believe that Ricky Watters would get the nod over Chris Warren. Warren is the Seahawks' all-time-leading rusher. Watters most certainly had a better overall career in the NFL, but Chris Warren was far better as a player on the Seahawks. If part of your criteria was to name the best player with the best overall career on each team, Watters should not get the vote. Franco Harris, after all, was a member of the Seahawks in 1984. Warren's accomplishments on the Seahawks should not be overlooked. I love your magazine. Keep up the great work.

"It takes a big calamity to shock this country all at once," observes legendary humorist Will Rodgers, "but Knute, you did it. You died one of our national heroes." April 2 Irish Legend Emil "Red" Sitko is one of the greatest fullbacks in Notre Dame history: At only five-foot-eight and 175 pounds, Sitko was a dogged runner who never lost a game in three years under Frank Leahy, from 1947 to 1949. In his final two seasons, Sitko was a consensus All-American. He ended his career with 2,226 yards and twenty-six touchdowns. April 3 Irish Landmark Opponents had an incredibly difficult time trying to pass on Ara Parseghian's 1967 team. That squad set long-standing NCAA season defensive records for lowest completion allowed (.333) and fewest yards allowed per pass attempt (3.78).
