Extractions: Special to NFL.com (Dec. 14, 2003) Brent Jones is still looking for his rush. Building a venture capital fund with $109 million under management, raising a leverage buyout fund, and stealing one of the top CFOs in the country from a competitor is all well and good. But he still can't find anything to match the adrenaline he used to feel catching pipeline passes from quarterback Steve Young as a tight end for the San Francisco 49ers. NFL Network Listen LIVE to NFL games, plus watch video news and features of your favorite team. "You've got to find a way to still compete," said Jones, co-founder of Northgate Capital. "It is not the same, nothing replaces the special opportunity to play professional sports, but it is exciting." Jones signed with the 49ers as a free agent from Santa Clara University in 1987 and retired as a four-time Pro Bowler with three Super Bowl rings at the end of the 1997 season. The tight end was known for getting open in crowded zones over the middle, recording 417 receptions for 5,195 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Stanford Football Players Seek Redemption Against Notre Dame So what kind of emotions run through a football player s head when he s about to 256 yards) and FB tommy vardell (four, oneyard touchdown runs), http://www.paloaltoonline.com/weekly/morgue/2002/2002_10_04.fridayfb.html
Extractions: Search the Archive: Back to the Weekly Home Page Classifieds Palo Alto Online Publication Date: Friday, October 04, 2002 Rick Eymer Rick Eymer (October 04, 2002) So what kind of emotions run through a football player's head when he's about to confront the coach who recruited him to Stanford, and is now standing on the enemy sidelines? That's what faces the Cardinal, whom take a 1-2 record into South Bend on Saturday to face No. 9-ranked Notre Dame (4-0) and former coach Tyrone Willingham. "The guys fell really strongly about the job they did and the opportunities that Tyrone and his staff created for them, so there is an excitement to show that they're continuing to develop," said Stanford coach Buddy Teevens. "There is certainly some inside knowledge and awareness based on the fact that they've worked with these guys over time, but our guys have also changed over time. They're a year older, they're involved in a different system and they've matured physically and mentally. It's a great opportunity to play a great team regardless of who's coaching them." Stanford also has the opportunity to show its better than what it showed in last week's humbling Pac-10 loss to Arizona State. After all, the Cardinal have shown a penchant for knocking off top teams. That all happened under Willingham, of course, so its also a chance to show off in front of him.

Peripherals SEARCH Back to School Buying Guide NFL GameDay 99 URL: http://reviews.cnet.com/4505-9696_7-30976665.html For PC football fans, it's become almost a given that you can't have impressive on-field action and realistic league and simulation results in the same football simulation. Front Page Sports: Football Pro? Great league management, a vast array of coaching options, and solid simulation results - but anemic play on the gridiron. Madden NFL 98? Addictive gameplay and pulse-pounding drama on the field - and merely average coaching and league-play features away from it. NFL GameDay 99 is no exception. If you're looking for a simulation that lets you use real-life lineups, create custom leagues, or launch a career that spans several seasons, you're out of luck here. But if you're in search of the most realistic - and consequently most challenging - on-field play you can find in a football simulation, GameDay 99 is at the head of the class. There are lots of reasons for GameDay 99's success on the field, but the biggest is the artificial intelligence (AI) programming of the computer-controlled opponents. If you think you can rip off big chunks of yardage by running the same play over and over again, you've got another thing coming. The defenses really do adjust to your play-calling tendencies, and gamers accustomed to steamrolling even powerhouses like San Francisco and Green Bay in other action-oriented games will be a little miffed to learn that it's just not gonna happen here. Your only hope for scoring success in GameDay 99 is the same as in the NFL: Establish a balanced attack and stick with it as long as possible.

Northgate Capital | News Fourtime pro-bowler Brent Jones, Touchdown tommy vardell and Mark Harris, took turns ripping the very idea of a firm launched by ex-football players, http://www.northgatecapital.com/news01.html
Extractions: The limited partner community is often characterized as a fraternity, and by extension, some may be quick to dismiss Northgate Capital as the industry's jock fraternity. Four-time pro-bowler Brent Jones, "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell and Mark Harris, all ex-NFL players, launched the firm in 1998. Bain Capital veteran Jared Stone joined the firm in 2003 and former McKinsey exec Hosein Khajeh-Hosseiny rounds out the partner roll, having been hired four months ago. The story goes that Northgate was the subject of a Harvard Business School Case Study, and while the students at first took turns ripping the very idea of a firm launched by ex-football players, once they saw Northgate's presentation the students were easily convinced that this was for real. Soon after, more than 100 resumes flowed into the group's mailbox. "Brent, Tommy and Mark had been investing for the better part of the 1990s in venture capital and buyout funds and even directly in deals," Stone says. "In the process they became very savvy and sophisticated in the asset class and they were also able to develop great relationships with the fund managers themselves."

Extractions: MSU's record-setting running back named Div. I Academic All American of the Year Junior Ryan Johnson, Montana State's record-setting running back, has been named the Verizon Academic All-American of the Year for football in Division I, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Monday. A finalist for the Payton Trophy, given to Division I-AA's top player, Johnson was also named First Team Academic All-America for the second consecutive year. He is the first Bobcat player to earn First Team honors twice, and the first named as Academic All-America of the Year in any sport. The award helps cap a season in which Johnson rushed for a school-record 1,537 yards. A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Johnson is a pre-physical therapy major with a 4.0 grade point average (out of 4.0). "It's a tremendous honor just to be mentioned with guys of that caliber," Johnson said, "the elite players in the nation. It's a tribute to this football program, the University, and the faculty here. This is a great University." Johnson's achievements come as no surprise to Bobcat coach Mike Kramer. "This is an astounding honor for Ryan. He is an exceptional individual who has committed himself to excelling in the classroom and on the field. Of all the individual awards a player can earn, I don't think any is as special as this one. To be recognized as the top student-athlete in all of Division I college football, and to earn this award over a Heisman Trophy finalist and numerous All-Americas from BCS programs, is a tremendous tribute to Ryan, to his parents, and to his professors. This is a great university, a very difficult and challenging one, and Ryan has not only met the challenge as a student but he's done so while performing on the football field at an incredibly high level. Ryan Johnson is what college athletics is all about."

Three years later, he started 12 games at fullback for the 2000 NFC Champions. I knew from the time I was in high school that I was going to be a football player at the next level. I remember speaking to a teacher right before my senior year, and he asked me about the pressures of being recruited by a bunch of colleges. I told him that even if a single school hadn't recruited me, I'd still be playing and having fun. That's the perspective I had on the game: regardless of what people said on the outside, or regardless of whether I was going to get a scholarship, I enjoyed the game. I enjoyed the lessons I learned and the friendships that I made. That's what it was all about for me.
