Extractions: Thomas attorneys seeking millions of dollars in wrongful death suit. Published Friday, August 6, 2004 KANSAS CITY (AP) - Had he lived to finish his football career, the Kansas City Chiefs Derrick Thomas could have earned $45 million more as a player, sports agent Leigh Steinberg testified in the trial of a wrongful death lawsuit against General Motors Corp. Steinberg, who represented the nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker for a decade, said yesterday that Thomas also could have made millions more from broadcasting, endorsements and speaking fees. Thomas was 33 when he died about two weeks after the Chevrolet Suburban he was driving went off Interstate 435 and flipped several times during an icy snowstorm on Jan. 23, 2000. The lawsuit, filed in Jackson County Circuit Court by Thomas mother and seven children, contends that General Motors is at fault because the sport utility vehicle had a weak roof that collapsed and caused Thomas fatal injuries.

By Jason Powell Associate Editor April 15, 2005 Five linebackers are considered potential first-round picks. Meanwhile, Derrick Johnson and Shawne Merriman are climbing up the draft boards and both might crack the top-10 overall picks on April 23. Does the class of 2005 contain a player who make an immediate impact like Jonathan Vilma did as a rookie for the Jets last year? Height: 6-3 Johnson's stock soared thanks to his impressive scouting combine workout. He was highly regarded in most camps prior to the combine, but his fast workout times have increased his value with some teams. However, those same workouts actually scared some scouts into comparing him to former Eagles' defensive end/linebacker Mike Mamula. You may recall that Mamula's pre-draft stock rose thanks to his scouting combine workout in 1995. Legend has it that Mamula spent several months training specifically for the scouting combine exercises, which was not as commonplace 10 years ago as it is today. The Eagles were so impressed with his efforts at the combine that they made him the No. 7 overall pick in the draft. Mamula never lived up to the lofty expectations that are associated with being a top pick.

Extractions: Tim Rattey is a serviceable NFL quarterback but when you have the top pick looking for an elite quarterback is always a safe route. With Matt Leinart gone it makes the top pick in the draft difficult to project. I still think the 49ers would like to trade down but until a general manager is in place it is anybody's guess. I am not high on Aaron Rodgers but he would be the likely pick here. If San Francisco stayed put and did not look at a QB than Antrel Rolle is the only other selection that makes sense. One can only hope that if this is the choice for the Dolphins he works out better than the last Texas running back they had on their roster. Benson is a tough inside runner who would be the best running back option for the offense if they don't trade down in an effort to acquire more draft picks. Braylon Edwards is suddenly trying to lobby support to become a Dolphin, since the team is unlikely to retain the services of David Boston this is a possibility.
