The Stuart Smith Scrutiny - Hillsborough Football Disaster The then home secretary, michael Howard, responded by stating that such a decisioncould not be made lightly and that he Hillsborough football Disaster. http://www.contrast.org/hillsborough/history/stuartsmith.shtm
Extractions: in rememberance survivors autobiographies other disasters ... Justice Campaign home The Labour party when in opposition promised Hillsborough families that if and when they came to power they would order a new inquiry into the Hillsborough Disaster. This was set within the context of Jimmy McGoverns' Hillsborough drama documentary bringing to the attention of the wider public The miscarriage of justice that had occurred over Hillsborough, in particular in respect of the inquests on the deceased. Peter Kilfoyle, M.P. for Walton Liverpool called for a fresh inquiry. The then home secretary, Michael Howard, responded by stating that such a decision could not be made lightly and that he would have to be convinced that "it would be in the public interest". When Labour came to power in May 1997, the new home secretary, Jack Straw, on meeting with bereaved families sympathised with them and promised them that there would be an independent judicial scrutiny to inquire into the disaster. He stated that Lord Justice Stuart-Smith would head the scrutiny. Whilst the immediate response of this was one of optimism from families, nevertheless a closer look at what was being ordered clearly showed the limitations of this 'scrutiny'. It was only to look at 'new evidence'. This effectively meant only evidence that had not been before the Taylor inquiry, the DPP, the Attorney General or South Yorkshire Police. Families quickly became confused by this 'Scrutiny'. What precisely was a 'scrutiny'. The popular impression (certainly in the media) was that there was to be a new inquiry. In reality however, the 'scrutiny' had no clear remit and seemed to operate largely at the discretion of Stuart-Smith himself. Of prime importance was that any consideration or decisions made would be within the paradigm of 'public interest'.

Extractions: DAILY Correspondent Holding court with reporters during the Gamecocks' media day at the Talladega Superspeedway, Stewart kept all loose with his good-natured banter and anecdotes. A commotion from players seated at a nearby table caught Stewart's attention and the defensive coordinator's demeanor changed instantly. He quickly quieted the group with an intense stare that communicated his message forcefully. A member of three national championship teams as a player and coach, Stewart knows when to turn on the intensity. "Coach Stewart, he's just a big softie," said Jacksonville senior linebacker Jonathan Crutcher, who made sure Stewart heard his comments before lowering his voice. "He's a good man on and off the football field, but when things aren't going right he can be tough." A former star lineman at Austin High, Stewart helped guide Jacksonville to the 2003 Ohio Valley Conference championship in the school's first year in the league. As a player, Stewart started at noseguard on two Troy State NCAA Division II championship teams (1984 and '87) and was an assistant coach when Jacksonville won the 1992 Division II title.

Extractions: THIS is the 50th anniversary of Mike Souchak's victory in the Houston Open, the second of his three wins on the PGA Tour that wonderful year, 1955. Earlier, he shot a first-round score of 60 and ran away with the Texas Open, finishing a record 27 under par. These were the first titles of his pro career, and the third came in the Havana Invitational, which tells you how long ago all this happened. We were still sending golfers to Cuba and, in return, there were no U.S. sanctions against Havana cigars. Souchak's golden anniversary may be no big deal at the Shell Houston Open this week, mainly because the history of this tournament is so complicated. It has been played under eight names, on nine courses and with four title sponsors.

Extractions: FALL FOOTBALL READING While it cannot be denied that the World Series and certainly this year's dramatic playoffs leading up to the fall classic have brought baseball fever to the peak of national enthusiasm, permit me the heresy of suggesting that it is football and not baseball that is truly our national pastime. While the fans of both sports can present passionate arguments for their game as America's number one sport, football is a game that finds its fans at several levels beyond the devotion of fans to their professional teams. Football finds passionate devotees not only at its National Football League games, but also at college games across the land and at countless high schools of every imaginable size.
