He is noted for his quickness, strength, and exceptional ability to change directions while running at top speed. Sanders was born in Wichita, Kansas, and educated at Oklahoma State University. In 1988, his junior season at Oklahoma State, he set numerous National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) records. They included scoring 39 touchdowns, rushing for 2628 yards, and gaining 3250 all-purpose yards (yards gained from rushing, pass receptions, and kickoff and punt returns). For his accomplishments that season he won the Heisman Trophy as college football's best player. Sanders was selected by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 1989 NFL draft. He made an immediate impact that year in his first season, rushing for 1470 yards and 14 touchdowns and being named the NFL's rookie of the year. When Barry was a kid he was considered to be too short to play football well at the college level. In fact, his 1,417 yards rushing in his senior year of high school wasn't enough to impress college recruiters. One recruiter told Barry's coach, "We don't need another midget." Only two colleges offered Barry a football scholarship. Barry accepted a scholarship from Oklahoma Here are some of Barrys career achievements that he has done in the short time he has played the game. Extractions: "If there was ever an artist, he was a Picasso. He was one of the few that would make other athletes' jaws drop. You'd go, 'Oh, man, did you see that?' You'd call up another top running back and go, 'Yo, Dickerson, did you check that out?' " said Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Barry Sanders, who won four rushing titles and had 15,269 yards on the ground when he unexpectedly retired, will be profiled on Saturday, September 24 at 4 p.m. ET. Think of Barry Sanders as a coin. "Heads" is the record-setting running back who was described as electrifying, explosive, mesmerizing and unstoppable. "Tails" is the quiet, humble, religious, man who doesn't like attention, treasures his privacy and does his own laundry. Flip a coin. You got either a terrific player or a nice guy. First, the player. His best year was 1997, when the 5-foot-8, 200-pound Sanders became the third runner to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. His 2,053 yards put him behind Eric Dickerson (2,105 in 1984) and ahead of O.J. Simpson (2,003 in 1973). Sanders, who played 10 years with the Detroit Lions, is third all-time in NFL rushing, trailing only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton. He had 15,269 yards when he unexpectedly retired before the 1999 season. He decided that breaking Payton's record of 16,726 yards was not all that important to him and it was Smith, who started in the NFL a year after Sanders, who snapped Payton's mark.

Extractions: CANTON, Ohio He was never a man that said many words. Never a man that gave a good quote. He was never a man that showed much emotion. Never a man that spiked the ball after a touchdown. But on Sunday, Barry Sanders kept smiling. Kept laughing. He stood at the podium in front of some 23,000 football die-hards, in one of the biggest speeches of his life, and constantly chuckled like a little kid who had heard a naughty word. Sanders did a lot more smiling on Sunday than he did in his playing days. Perhaps it was his way to deal with the pressure. Or perhaps five years of retirement has busted Sanders out of his shell. More likely, though, was that it all finally sank in. The 15,000 yards. The 109 touchdowns. The five NFL records. The 12 Detroit Lions records.

Extractions: CANTON, Ohio (Aug. 8, 2004) It wasn't until the fourth game of the 1985 season that the coach at Wichita North High School decided to give an undersized senior a shot to play running back. And after seeing what that kid could do at the position, Coach must have been kicking himself for not giving Barry Sanders the ball sooner. Of course, Sanders made up for lost time. After three years at Oklahoma State that included a Heisman Trophy, and then 10 electrifying seasons with the Detroit Lions , Sanders was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame , joining John Elway, Bob Brown and Carl Eller in the Class of 2004. Someone asked Sanders at the pre-enshrinement press conference why it is that no running backs today have adopted his style. Brown and Eller, sitting next to each other at the podium, looked at each other and laughed. Who else could run like Barry Sanders, who led the league in rushing four times? Who could average 1,527 yards over 10 seasons?

Rich Eisen: When you make moves like that, do you know what you're doing? Do you feel that, do you see that or does it just happen? Barry Sanders: A lot of it is impulsive. Football is a very quick game, it moves very fast, especially at the professional level. With the great linebackers like yourself and Seth, when you do something, you have to do it quick. A lot of it is instinctive. But also, when you train and you prepare for it, you're ready for moments like that. NFL Network
