Extractions: In 1975, the Chicago Bears picked him fourth overall in the first round of the NFL draft. The Bears had not had a winning record for eight seasons. In his rookie season as a running back, Payton started seven games and rushed for 679 yards. The next year, he rushed for 1,309 and just missed the rushing title because of an injury late in the season. Chicago finished the season with a 7-7 record. It was the first of ten consecutive 1000 plus yard seasons for Payton. Finally, in 1985 the Chicago Bears made it to the Super Bowl. They played and defeated the New England Patriots by a score of 46-10. Payton was again named the leagues most valuable player, but did not score a point in the Super Bowl game. Payton regretted that and the Chicago Bears coach, Mike Ditka, apologized for that fact also. During his career Payton played 189 straight games for the Chicago Bears and also ran for 16,726 career rushing yards, which is still a league record. Payton retired from the NFL in 1987. His number, thirty-four, was retired immediately. Payton was elected to the hall of fame in 1993. When he was elected, Jim Finks, the former general manager of the Chicago Bears, described Payton as a complete football player, better than Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson.

A star for the Chicago Bears from 1974 to 1987, Payton rushed for a National Football League career record of 16,726 yards. Known to football fans everywhere as "Sweetness," he helped lead the Bears to a Super Bowl victory following the 1985 season and over the years established himself as one of the sports world's most popular and personable role models. Payton was beloved by his teammates, idolized by his fans, and embraced by business partners. Even in his dying days, however, Payton maintained his dignity, a spirit of community charity, and a legendary ability to pull of practical jokes that would send friends and family reeling with laughter. Before he passed away, he reportedly also renewed his commitment to his Christian faith. His death on November 1 coincided with the day known as All Saints Day in many Christian quarters. In Walter Payton , dozens of his contemporaries, former teammates, coaches, childhood and college chums, business partners, fans, and friends offer in their own words their favorite memories and anecdotes of this man they loved so much.

Extractions: I cried. When Walter Payton retired as the leading rusher in NFL history back in 1987, when I was still fresh off my eighth birthday, I just started crying. My favorite player the man I tried to be like when I was running around in those neighborhood backyards playing two-on-two football with my friends was gone. Before I wanted to be like Mike, I wanted to be like Walter. Monday, after a fight with bile duct cancer, Payton died at the young age of 45. Because of my young age, my memories of my favorite player aren't many and the ones I do have aren't crystal-clear photographs imprinted in my mind forever. I remember an NFL Films video I had with a segment on JOP (jumping over the pile), a form of a touchdown plunge that Walter pioneered for goal line situations. Here, instead of pounding hard, he took the ball from the quarterback and dove head first at what seemed to be about 10 feet above the pile of linemen and linebackers into the serenity of the waiting end zone. I remember the Chicago Bears on the original Tecmo Bowl for Nintendo and how much you had to respect its running game because a computer representation of number 34 would make you pay if you didn't.

Recent winners include Will Shields Troy Vincent Jerome Bettis Derrick Brooks of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jim Flanigan formerly of the Chicago Bears.
