Extractions: Weblog Home Fascinating article in The Times today, sadly already sequestered behind paid registration, about WebFootballClub.com in France. Here's the SP. The club is managed by fans via its website. Most fans don't go to games but watch online. Every one gets a vote and votes are weighted by track record in making effective choices (don't ask me to explain). There is a club coach, but "all he can do is shout at the team and determine substitutions during matches". Soon, even substitutions will be done by fans watching live webcasts. Fierce debates take place in online forums. Result? The club went from the fifth division of the Caen district to the second, in back-to-back championship wins. And went undefeated last season. And how about this for loyalty, all you frequent flier manipulators? Corinne Teissier, a 26-year old primary school teacher, was amongst the supporters who could take credit for the triumph. She saw all the games on the internet and acquired enough points to join the most influential grade of decision-makers. "I know everything about the players, except those that have joined this season, but I will be watching them very carefully." She goes on to a detailed discussion of the club's prospects.

Extractions: Eagles Cruise Past Maroons, 29-13 in Season Opener By Travis Bessinger Last Friday night, the Watonga Eagles opened up the 2004-2005 football season on the road with an impressive 29-14 road victory over the Blackwell Maroons. The Eagles did most of their offensive damage on the ground as they rushed for 244 yards total. Junior tailback Donte Richey finished with 183 yards on 14 carries. Senior backup quarterback Kade Poulson finished with 64 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, the Eagles clamped down when needed, particularly in the first half and in goal-line situations. Linebackers Poulson, Herman Johnson, and Richey were part of the attack. Johnson finished with two sacks. The defensive line did its share of the dirty work. Juniors Jay Bessinger, Matt Goff, and Cole Wallace had numerous tackles. Sophomore safety Wayne Runnels forced the only Blackwell turnover, an interception. Runnels and his teammates in the secondary put in a solid performance as well. Dillon Nelson, Austin Goerke, Billy Benson, and Michael Luetkemeyer all provided fierce tackling. Luck was on Watongas side from the beginning of the game.

Columnists Smizik: Veteran receiver is missing ingredient Tuesday, June 11, 2002 On the first day of minicamp, which is something like the third phase of the Steelers' off-season program, Coach Bill Cowher stood outside the team's training facility and talked about the intangibles that go into making a championship football team. "There has been a really good focus on the field, and they're getting something done," he said. "They're developing that rapport and camaraderie that I think is so important." It's never been proven whether winning is the result of chemistry or if chemistry is the result of winning. It doesn't matter with the Steelers. They are proven winners with chemistry. This is a seriously talented and supremely confident team. It knows what it takes to win and knows what must be done to get at least one step further than last season. Toward that end, wide receiver Herman Moore, who is a free agent after an outstanding career with the Detroit Lions, was a subject for discussion by Cowher and the players. The Steelers will meet with Moore and Terrance Mathis, 35, another wide receiver with exceptional credentials, with an eye toward signing one of them as the team's No. 3 receiver.
