Extractions: frajkowski@stcloudtimes.com COLLEGEVILLE Facing an overmatched opponent from a smaller conference, the St. John's University football team was expected to roll to an easy victory Saturday afternoon. Expectations met. The Johnnies piled up 554 yards of offense and allowed 68 on the way to evening their record at 1-1 with a 48-0 non-conference win over Northwestern College of Roseville at Clemens Stadium. "This was a step in the right direction," said St. John's freshman quarterback Alex Kofoed, who despite a couple of early miscues looked good in his first collegiate start throwing for 198 yards and four touchdowns before exiting early in the third quarter with his team leading 41-0. "We came in knowing this was a game we should win. But we executed and did the job we were supposed to do. That was good to see." The victory was the 415th in St. John's coach John Gagliardi's 56-season collegiate career, widening his lead as the winningest coach in college football history.

Football NFL NOTEBOOK November 5, 2004 Before Denver safety John Lynch limped off the field last Sunday, he started yelling toward the Atlanta huddle, upset that he got hurt on a block made 30 yards away from the play. ADVERTISEMENT Falcons coach Jim Mora's response: "What goes around comes around." It was a subtle dig at the Broncos, who for the second straight week find themselves embroiled in a debate over the fine line between what's legal and what's moral in the NFL. "I don't think etiquette and football really go together but there's a code of conduct," Lynch said. "Thirty yards away from the ball, I don't think that's necessary." At issue was receiver Brian Finneran's block on Lynch. Finneran broke the bone above Lynch's tailbone when he hit the safety on the side. Lynch conceded the hit was legal, but maybe not necessary a conclusion that was easy to figure simply by seeing his reaction after the play. The Finneran-Lynch imbroglio was a continuation of last week's debate, when Broncos offensive lineman

Extractions: All Departments By ROGER MILLS Safety John Lynch, 28, has carved a reputation for being a fierce hitter and a superb run-stopper. One of four Bucs to be named All-Pro, an honor reserved for the best player in the league at each position, Lynch recently shared a few thoughts with Times staff writer Roger Mills. Main Bucs page Bucs forum Meet you in St. Louis Bucs are banged up but not crippled ... Hubert Mizell Bucs fortunate JJ said no and Dungy said yes Gary Shelton Rams' rout should alert Bucs to be afraid be very afraid Q: Every team has a weakness. Where might the Bucs be vulnerable? A: I keep on thinking that usually a team that's 12-5 and won nine of their last 10 games, somewhere along the way they have blown people out and had a chance to let their minds rest in certain games. We've been in every game, and that's taxing on you. Mentally, that's hard. The other thing is we fight for everything we get, even in games where we're blowing New Orleans out, we're thinking: "One touchdown and an onside kick and they tie this ballgame." So I think now (being in those close games) serves as a strength because we're battle-tested. But I have been concerned that sooner or later (the close games) have got to wear you down.
