In year's past there was either a clear-cut Franchise player at one of the positions, but this year there is no real consensus anywhere. For example last year was QB and WR (Manning, Roethlisberger, Rivers/Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, Michael Clayton) heavy and RBs/DE didn't get picked until later. In 2003 QBs (Palmer, Leftwich, Boller) and DTs (Robertson, Kev Williams, Kennedy, Ty Warren etc) were a premium. This year it doesn't look like there is a true "franchise" player at any position.

Extractions: by Bobby Summers Daily Cougar Staff It won't be the Hatfields and McCoys when the Houston Cougars and Rice Owls tangle in their last Southwest Conference football game Saturday, a game that could be portrayed either as Hatfield vs. Helton or the Cougars vs. the Owls. But Houston head coach Kim Helton must feel like he's in that famous feud as he tries to focus on the game rather than a lawsuit filed against him by two former coaches. "The biggest question is if we can slow them down defensively," Helton said. "They have a powerful running game. They also have a strong defense, especially if you get behind and let them control the ball." "I think this game is going to be pretty good," said Rice head coach Ken Hatfield. "Against Texas Tech, they (Houston) played extremely well." The Owls (2-7-1) were off last week after losing to Baylor, 34-6, on Nov. 18. Hatfield's problem is finding a healthy quarterback to run the Owl s' wishbone offense this week. Tillman is the third starting quarterback for Rice this season. Senior Josh LaRocca started the first seven games before a foot injury ended his season. Nelson started two games.

Extractions: Nearly 100 men in cleats showed up at Sam Boyd Stadium on Sunday afternoon, still grasping at their boyhood dreams. They came hoping Frank Haege would answer a nagging question for them: Am I talented enough to be a professional football player? On a mission to find out the answer, each spent $50 for a tryout with the Las Vegas Gladiators, an Arena Football League team that recently relocated from New Jersey and has Haege as its head coach. The rare chance to impress Haege and his fellow coaches would be brief; the gridiron audition was limited to 2 1/2 hours. The tryout was held to find players to serve on the team's practice squad.

Official Site Double-team: Pittman, Hanspard join NFL.com wire reports TAMPA, Fla. (March 25, 2002) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent running backs Michael Pittman and Byron Hanspard. Pittman, who played the last four seasons for the Arizona Cardinals, agreed to a five-year contract. Hanspard, a former second-round draft pick who hasn't played in the NFL since 1999, received a one-year deal. When the Bucs lost Warrick Dunn to the Falcons via free agency, new coach Jon Gruden's top priority became finding a replacement. "Michael Pittman is a young, productive player who definitely upgrades us at the running back position," Bucs general manager Rich McKay said. "Michael is a hard-nosed runner with excellent receiving skills. We're pleased to add him to our football team." Pittman, a fourth-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 1998, rushed for 1,945 yards and eight touchdowns with Arizona. He also caught 131 passes for 1,037 yards and two TDs, while starting 28 of 56 games. The 6-foot, 218-pound running back drew interest from the Bucs after Dunn accepted Atlanta's lucrative offer instead of re-signing with Tampa Bay two weeks ago. Dunn shared time with
