Extractions: Prep blast from the past wants championship for RRHS By Gary Herron/Observer sports editor Talk about a blast from the past: A Hurricane has blown into Rio Rancho. No, it's nothing to worry about, but rather something possibly calling for celebration. Nelson Smith, who played on La Cueva's 1992 state championship team, then played at the University of Miami before wrapping up his college eligibility at Eastern New Mexico University, will be on the Rams' sideline this fall. "I'm a Ram now," Smith, a 1994 La Cueva graduate, said last week while helping out at the New Mexico State football camp at RRHS. "I bleed blue; as long as I'm around blue, I'm OK. "Coach (Phil) Lopez is a good coach; I've known him for the past five years," Smith said. "He asked me to coach and I wanted to get back in the coaching scene. I've been coaching basketball at Highland the past two years with coach (Danny) Brown. We inherited a program that wasn't very good and we turned the tempo around - a program that was 0-50 - and we ended up turning that program around in two years. I wanted to coach football and coach Brown knew it and this opportunity came up and I jumped on it." "It's very important (to get someone like Smith) because our young men know and understand a little bit of his history," Lopez said. "Anytime you can get someone like coach Smith, who played at the D-1 level, it brings something extra to the table."

Extractions: Pace should win Heisman, send others to Kuala Lumpur By Corey Hale, Herald Staff Though he coached Georgia Tech University to the most lopsided victory in college football history, John Heisman is best known for a little bronze trophy that bares his name and is presented annually to the best collegiate player in the nation. The presentation of the most-coveted of football accolades is almost always surrounded by questions. Midway through the season, things start clearing up a little. Some pre-season favorites are starting to drop out. Say "goodbye" to Florida State University's "Dionne" Warrick Dunn. He might lead the Psychic Seminoles' Network to a bowl game and a possible national championship. But with 510 yards rushing and four touchdowns through five games, put a fork in him he's Dunn. Also say farewell to the University of Tennessee's much-touted quarterback Peyton Manning. He's off to a splendid junior year and a promising career in the NFL. But only a self-destruction by the University of Florida's Danny Wuerffel would give Manning a shot at the Heisman.

FinHeaven & Co Forums - The Injustice That Is The Heisman byron hanspard and Troy Davis both went over 2000 yards and did not win the heisman . That is the best defense in college football we are talking about. http://www.finheaven.com/boardvb2/archive/index.php/t-9569.html
Extractions: Talk Football PDA View Full Version : The injustice that is the Heisman Dajesus 11-24-2002, 01:58 AM How can you give the heisman to anyone other than Larry Johnson? When did the heisman get so mixed up with the national title race? Banks is right now the leader, but has average stats compared to what has been done in the past by college football QBs. Dorsey and McGahee are in the same boat, but all 3 are on teams that will go to a BCS bowl game. What Larry Johnson has done this year not only blows away everyone else in college football at RB, but is among the top 5 RB seasons in the past 20 years. All 5 RBs that have rushed for 2000 yards in the past 20 years have won the heisman, but none of them came any where near the ypc that Larry has this season. Larry Johnson has an 8+ ypc, the closest to him of 2000 yard backs was Barry Sanders who had a 7.6 ypc. He is also on a team that had a sub .500 season last year, and has pretty much singlehandley lead Penn St to a 9 win season. Dorsey and McGahee in all fairness can't even be considered since they have each other, and one of the best defenses and o-lines in college football. Banks would be the only other canadate in my eyes, but he is not doing anything others haven't done in the past. You can easily compare Larry Johnson's season to the best of all time, you can't do that to Banks. baccarat 11-24-2002, 03:00 AM

Teams are listed alpabetically There's plenty of blame for Saints' collapse A year ago, the Saints scored nine defensive touchdowns. Eleven games into this season their defense hasn't found the end zone once, but file same cannot be said about the opposition. Opponents have rallied in the fourth quarter to snatch victories in five of the team's nine losses. Twice the defense has been burned for touchdowns on "Hail Mary" passes, the most notable being the 56-yard prayer rookies Tim Couch and Kevin Johnson collaborated on as time expired, giving the Browns their first victory. In the second halves of the past two weeks the Jaguars scored 24 points, then the Rams piled up 28, blowing open close games.

Extractions: Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999 Anders, Anderson injuries increase fantasy values of backups By Jeff Agrest, Associate editor There seems to be an injury bug flying around among NFL running backs. Leon Johnson, done. Shawn Bryson, done. Daryl Johnston, done. Derrick Cullors, done. And the list goes on and on. Both injuries open the door for backups to take center stage, Bam Morris and Rashaan Shehee for Kansas City and Byron Hanspard for Atlanta. What follows are breakdowns of all three players and what their fantasy values might be. At this point, all three are worthy of being claimed, since all three should see playing time in the immediate future.
