In the spirit of the season, check out our list of favorite bowl games, then be sure to vote in the poll on the right to crown the best bowl battle of them all. 1. 1979 Sugar Bowl (Penn State vs. Alabama) Keith Jackson's could never forget the '79 Sugar Bowl, and we could never forget his call. Whoa, Nellie! Keith Jackson, who's forgotten far more about college football than we'll ever know, says it's one of the greatest games he's seen. No. 2 Alabama vs. No. 1 Penn State and a crowd of 76,824 at the Superdome. It's a defensive battle. The Tide lead 7-0 at the half, and 14-7 with less than five minutes left in the game. Penn State forces a fumble, and recovers on Alabama's 19. The Nittany Lions move quickly to the eight. Then comes "The Goal Line Stand." Penn State runs three times, and is stopped inches from the end zone. Jackson's call: "Fourth down and a foot separating top-ranked Penn State from a possible national championship. Fusina hands to Guman. He didn't make it! He didn't make it! What an unbelievable goal line stand by Alabama!" There are still four minutes remaining, and Penn State gets another chance, but Alabama holds on for the 14-7 victory.

Green Panthers QB situation ProFootballWeekly.com asks contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his thoughts on the hottest topics in the NFL. Patriots take note of solid efforts The Rams demoted QB Joe Germaine to third-string, then traded him to the Chiefs for a sixth-round draft pick in 2002 just two days later. To fill out the roster, the Rams came to terms with QB Jamie Martin, who was recently released by the Jaguars. With starting C Bubba Miller sidelined for up to two months following ankle surgery, the Eagles signed veteran Jim Pyne. A second option is moving Doug Brzezinski, who was an All-Rookie guard before losing his job last year, to center, where he could probably be a pretty good player if he could make the full adjustment. He did play center at Boston College, but guard was clearly the better of his two positions. CB Thomas Smith, released by the Bears last week, agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with the Colts Monday. Smith chose the Colts from a list of approximately eight teams that were interested in him.

Extractions: Sophomore second baseman Jason Zoeller might have saved the Buckeye baseball season with a three-run home run to cap a five-run fifth inning in Ohio State's 6-4 victory in the second game of this weekend's four-game series against Purdue. The win snapped OSU's six-game losing streak, during which the Buckeyes played baseball according to Murphy's Law - everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Zoeller's home run changed everything. Senior center fielder Mike Rabin said after the game that "After that three-run homer, we got our swagger back." That swagger not only carried the Buckeyes to that win, but to sweeping through the final two games of the series as well. While the Buckeyes never expected to have a record of 3-5 after two Big Ten series, a sweep of Michigan State next weekend at home puts the Buckeyes back into the race heading into a nationally televised game at Michigan on April 22. While Columbus focuses on the battle between juniors Justin Zwick and Troy Smith for the starting quarterback role, a former Buckeye quarterback had himself quite a weekend in Arena Football. Joe Germaine, who led the Buckeyes to a 1997 Rose Bowl win and quarterbacked the 1998 team that nearly won a national championship, threw eight touchdowns and zero interceptions in leading the Arizona Rattlers to a 70-53 win over the Columbus Destroyers. Germaine's success came as another former Buckeye, Scott McMullen, made his Destroyers debut in relief of starter Matt D'Orazio. McMullen led one drive, in which he completed 4-of-6 passes for 34 yards and had a touchdown run. It's good to see former Buckeyes having success, even if it is in Arena Football. Of course, another former Buckeye, Destroyers coach Chris Spielman, is having troubles, coaching the team to a 1-9 record. Maybe Nationwide Arena is cursed - neither the Destroyers nor the Blue Jackets have ever had a winning season.

Extractions: By Jim Rose Daily Sports Editor Early in this football season - say, a little more than two months ago - there were signs indicating that Tom Brady's days as Michigan's starting quarterback were numbered. From the get-go, the stars seemed to be aligned against Brady. Fifth-year senior Scott Dreisbach was more experienced, after all; incoming freshman Drew Henson had the fans, the Yankees and Sports Illustrated on his side. Heck, even Lloyd Carr called Henson "the most talented quarterback" he'd ever been around. So Brady - who came oh-so-close to winning the job from Brian Griese a year earlier, but as backup was relegated to the sidelines during the Wolverines' 12-0 season - didn't exactly take over with his name in lights. In fact, you might even say that he toiled in the shadow of his backup - Henson, the phenom everyone wanted to see. And after the Wolverines opened the season with a pair of losses, the cries for Henson didn't get any quieter. With a repeat national title already out of the question by Sept. 12, there were more than a few fans who called for the season to become one big Henson training session.
