Online Poker Monday, August 08, 2005 Rags-to-riches , that is how one would describe the illustrious career of Rich Gannon, the resident quarterback of the Silver and Black tradition of football, the Oakland Raiders. His injured neck, with a fragile vertebra still mending following a vicious helmet-to-helmet collision in Week 3 last season, were already conspiring to end Gannon's rags-to-riches football career even before the Raiders general was ready. In Rich Gannon's mindset; his arm, his legs and his heart desperately wanted to start his 19th National Football League (NFL) warfare, unfortunately, his neck and vertebra were not. Ultimately, leaving Gannon no choice, the four-time Pro Bowler and 2002 NFL Most Valuable Player, officially closed the chapter in his football career in front of his teammates, coaches and peers. It was a sad day, to say the least, at the Raiders' training facility in Napa. ''As far as the decision to retire, it was an easy one for me. It really was not my decision,'' said a reluctant Rich Gannon. ''I'm not able to continue to play physically, and that really takes all of the guesswork out of it,'' he added.

Honolulu Star-Bulletin Sports AFC quarterback rich gannon of the Oakland Raiders, left, I m in a town that loves their football team. They re very supportive in so many ways. http://starbulletin.com/2001/01/31/sports/story1.html
Extractions: Star-Bulletin The American Football Conference practice went by so fast yesterday at Aloha Stadium, Rich Gannon barely had time to put on his helmet. Not that the 35-year-old quarterback for the Oakland Raiders is complaining. The end of AFC head coach Jon Gruden's 30-minute workout was greeted by cheers equal to the sellout crowd expected to attend Sunday's Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium. Who: AFC vs. NFC Information: "He's the most popular guy out here," Gannon said of the coach he has played for the last two years with the Raiders. "Those are the kind of workouts Pro Bowl players love." Gannon has certainly enjoyed his relationship with Gruden. His career soared to new heights after leaving the Kansas City Chiefs in 1998 to join the resurgent Raiders, who advanced to the AFC title game earlier this month.

The Yahoo league had a draft this past Friday. I wasn't able to participate live but I didn't do too bad. Here is what I ended up with: Gannon, Rich (QB-Oak) Pittsburgh (DEF-Pit) As ashamed as I am to say it, I think my weakness might be the Steelers defense! I feel pretty good at QB with Gannon and Brady who both had statistically great years last year. Marvin Harrison should be fine at WR but I am not sure who to pair him with at this point. Stephen Davis has a lot to prove in Carolina and I am hoping he proves it to my benefit. Shannon Sharpe and Billy Miller should be fine at TE but that is not really a make it or break it position. Certainly Vinateri is sweet at kicker and Carney kicks indoors. Since none of you are likely to be playing this league, how bout a little help? Who would you start and why?
Extractions: NAPA - Rich Gannon was known privately as "Red-(Rear) Rich" during his six years leading the Raiders. "He's stubborn, boy, I'll tell you that," team managing general partner Al Davis said with a smile Saturday. But like him or not, there is a noticeable leadership void in the Oakland locker room entering this season, now that Gannon is officially retired. "Rich was the ideal leader," said Pro Bowl punter Shane Lechler, Gannon's locker neighbor at the team's Alameda headquarters for all six of the quarterback's Raiders seasons, 1999 to 2004. "He knew what was right, and he believed it. He walked that fine line of pushing guys to the edge. ... He was a great leader in that aspect and won a hell of a lot of football games. "Yeah, he may have ruffled a few feathers, but it didn't bother Rich. We're going to miss him around here."

Extractions: Times Sports Editor Rich Gannon is the epitome of perseverance. For most of his 13 years in the National Football League, Gannon roamed the sidelines with a clipboard and baseball cap as a backup quarterback for three teams. Of course, lackluster play by the starting QBs, or the occasional injury to them, allowed the Fox Chase native to see considerable action throughout his career. In fact, Gannon earned 47 starts between 1987 and 1998, performing consistently if not effectively. It wasn't until 1999 when Gannon, who attended St. Cecilia as a youngster, received a chance to start a full season. Gannon compiled such impressive stats with the Oakland Raiders that the league rewarded his effort with two Pro Bowl nominations. When he stepped onto the Oakland Coliseum field on Jan. 14, Gannon was the starting quarterback of the AFC Western Division champions, one game away from reaching the Super Bowl for the first time in his career. Unfortunately for the Raiders, their quarterback was unceremoniously introduced to Baltimore Ravens' defensive lineman Tony Siragusa.
