Extractions: The New Orleans Saints took a gamble on Adrian McPherson The talented and troubled quarterback, who threw his college career at Florida State away by betting on football games and committing a string of felonies, was selected yesterday in the fifth round of the NFL draft. "I'd be lying if I didn't think there was some risk," Saints director of player personnel Rick Mueller said. "But the upside is tremendous. He has rare talent and athletic ability." McPherson was kicked off the team after the 2002 season and arrested two days later. He faced felony charges of stealing a blank check and with receiving stolen goods after the check was cashed for $3,500. A second felony case charged him with cashing a series of bad checks, each for $76. A trial on a misdemeanor gambling charge he was accused of betting on football games, including his own earlier ended in a mistrial. In July of 2003, as part of a plea bargain, McPherson pleaded no contest to all charges at his felony trial. He was sentenced to 90 days in a work camp, did 50 hours of community service, and was on probation for 30 months. Probation ended April 18. McPherson tried to enroll at Tennessee State in August, 2003, but was rejected by the school. He joined the Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League early last year. McPherson was the AFL rookie of the year and fourth in the league in passing.

Help Defeat by a side 31 league places their juniors exposed West Bromwich's troubles as deeper than their Premiership travails. Without a win all season, neither the result nor the performance was palatable for Gary Megson at a time when his job is under intense pressure. Outrun and outfought, West Brom lacked the basic attributes required of a Premiership side playing away from home.

I, personally, am pretty hyped, but a couple of the teams seem to be really quiet (Jason, I am looking at you). In particular I am worried about Cooper's Troopers... they have a good strong team and I want to see them play regularly.

Extractions: Recently, the NCAA, backed by congressional allies such as Senator John McCain, proposed a ban on college sports betting. Youth Radio's Ben Simrin gives a perspective on the controversial issue. SCENE: Betting conversation between teenagers BEN: JOE: I've been a sports fan all my life. I remember in like the second grade when we were learning multiplication, everyone was good at multiples of three, you know, the easy ones, and I was best at multiples of seven because of all the football games I watched. BEN: JOE: We would gamble on like football games, just random football games. That's still what I do, basketball games for like $1 or something. The first couple times I gambled. Basically the same thing. It was pretty serious because winning a dollar back then was good. You could go buy some candy or whatever. It would rarely go over $1 because fourth or fifth grade we didn't have any money. Betting a $1 on a football game would be such a serious thing. It would be so intense to watch the game and like you would be rooting so hard for your team, for the team you wanted to win. It was just like crazy.

Extractions: It was a simple choice for Jason Broom. The Fort Hays State University junior tailback just wanted a chance to play and contribute. "I wanted a chance to start before my senior season," said Broom, who transferred from Northeastern Oklahoma State University. "I had a senior in front of me, and there was another guy that would have been a senior this year. It would have put me in at a senior. I wanted a chance to see what I could do before I was a senior." All the 5-foot-7, 210-pounder has done is help rewrite the record books at Fort Hays. Broom, who was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, rushed for 378 yards on 17 carries and scored five touchdowns last Saturday in a 60-6 nonconference pounding of Oklahoma's Panhandle State University at Lewis Field Stadium. The tailback set a new school and conference record for most yards in a game. The old Fort Hays record was 332 yards by Tom Evans against University of Southern Colorado on Oct. 31, 1970. Former New Mexico Highlands University standout Thelbert Withers held the previous RMAC record with 333 yards in a game against Fort Lewis (Colo.) College in 1992.
