(Feb. 20, 2003) The Jacksonville Jaguars designated safety Donovin Darius as their franchise player, indicating their desire to keep working with him on a long-term contract. The Jaguars, who are in negotiations with Darius on a long-term deal, must pay the average of the top five salaries of NFL safeties last season. Darius can negotiate with other teams, although the system makes it unlikely he'll draw much interest. If Darius signs an offer sheet, the Jaguars would have the right to match the offer, and if the Jaguars didn't match it, they would receive two first-round draft choices from the signing team. The deadline for signing a long-term deal is March 14. Any contract signed after that would cost the Jaguars their right to use the franchise tag for the duration of the contract.

Extractions: Jaguars safety Donovin Darius has agreed to a four-year contract extension, ending a couple of years of acrimony between Darius and the team, according to a league source. Advertisement Darius, who had been slapped with the franchise tag the past three years, a move that angered him at times, is expected to sign the new contract in the next day or two. The Jaguars report for training camp Friday and open drills on Saturday. Darius even went so far as to e-mail reporters in Miami and Minnesota to try and procure a trade. The Jaguars did have discussions with the Vikings, but no deal could be reached. The Jaguars see Darius as a hard-hitting leader on their young defense. He is entering his eighth season, and had perhaps his best last year when he started 16 games, had 59 tackles and five interceptions.
