Extractions: year (1968) press shot (Submitted) Giving back has always been part of Wayne Lineberrys long-term plans. As a star linebacker for legendary coach Clarence Stasavich, Lineberry only knew of one way to be a Pirate. That way was full on, 100 percent. He did it as a player; hes been doing it as a fan and Pirate Club supporter. But now, as when he was a player, he is bringing the sum of his skills on point to focus on helping his beloved Pirates in a way that will ensure that his alma mater has the tools to keep fighting climbing and working its way to the college football promised land. Lineberrys plan has always been to find his way back to Greenville back to where he has always felt at home. Only, he wanted to come back and make an impact on the program. His years as an executive in the insurance business first with New York Life and currently with Virginia Asset Management have taught him a great deal about financing futures. And if there is one future in particular he would like to insure and ensure, it would be that of the program.

Extractions: Union alum named to Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame (BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - August 12) - Former Transylvania (Ky.) University mens basketball coach and Union College graduate Don Lane is among nine inductees in the 2004 class of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. The nine will be officially welcomed into the Hall during ceremonies at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville on Sept. 9. Lane retired from his coaching position at Transy in 2001 with a 509-241 record in 26 seasons at the Pioneers helm and he has amassed more wins that any coach in school history. His career collegiate record of 524-254 earned him a spot in the NAIA in1997. He is also a member of the Pioneer Hall of Fame at Transy and the Union College Hall of Fame. Lane, a 1965 graduate of Union, was a member of the Bulldog basketball as a player and as a student assistant. He was a part of the 1964-65 KIAC Championship team. This is a tremendous honor, said Lane, who remains on the Transylvania physical education faculty. When you look at all the people who have been selected to the Kentucky Hall of Fame, particularly those who are going in this year, its just a humbling experience.

What Bears They Were by Richard Whittingham allows the greatest of those personalities-including Hall of Famers George 'Papa Bear' Halas, 'Iron' Mike Ditka, Red Grange (a.k.a. 'The Galloping Ghost'), Dan Hampton, Gale Sayers and many more-to tell the stories no newspaper would be allowed to print. Whether the Bears played at Wrigley Field or Soldier Field, the games were imbued with Papa Bear's manic drive for success while battling through heartache and high expectations. The "Sultana", carrying approximately 2,300 passengers, the majority being freed Union POWs, exploded while en route to Cairo, IL. Neither the cause of the explosion nor the final count of the dead (estimated at between 1,450 and 2,000) was ever determined. Today, the "Sultana" disaster remains the worst of its kind. 1880 - Francis Clarke and M.G. Foster patented the electrical hearing aid. 1899 - The Western Golf Association was founded in Chicago, IL. 1938 - Geraldine Apponyi was the first American woman to become a Queen. She married King Zog of Albania. 1938 - Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra recorded "I Hadnt Anyone til You" for Victor Records. Jack Leonard was featured as vocalist. 1946 - The first commercial carrier ship to be equipped with radar, the "SS African Star", was placed in service. 1947 - Organized baseball celebrated Babe Ruth Day. Major-league parks throughout the U.S. and Japan participated. A crowd of 60,000 fans honored their hero in ceremonies at Yankee Stadium in New York City. Ruth, who was dying of throat cancer, managed to put in an appearance to thank his former club. 1947 - The first broadcast of "Studio One" on CBS radio was broadcast. The show was full of great stars, but no sponsors. CBS dropped "Studio One" after a year on radio. The show, however, began a nine-year run on CBS-TV ... with sponsors.

The patent was granted on May 4, 1886. 1949 - "Captain Video and His Video Rangers" premiered on the Dumont Television Network. Captain Video was initially played by Richard Coogan. The voice of radios "Green Hornet", Al Hodge, replaced Coogan in 1951. Don Hastings played the roll of the ranger until the series ended in 1955. Maybe, if you check the basement or the attic, youll find your Captain Video decoder ring. Nows the time to use it, kids! 1955 - The first "Wide Wide World" was broadcast on NBC-TV. Dave Garroway, of the "Today" show, was the program host. 1958 - After nearly three years on NBC-TV, "Matinee Theatre" was seen for the final time. And a good thing, too. Critics called the show one of the most successful failures in theatrical history. 1959 - "West Side Story", with music by Leonard Bernstein, closed after 732 performances on Broadway. The show remains one of the brightest highlights in the history of the Great White Way.

The first Cub I remember idolizing was Bill Buckner, who is probably still sitting in an empty WGN TV booth telling stories that have no point, to imaginary versions of Len and Bob. The Cub I rooted for the hardest all through little league was Shawon Dunston. I just loved the way Shawon played all out all the time, though until Corey Patterson he was probably the Cub whose wild swinging and lack of plate discipline caused him to get the least out of an incredible set of physical gifts. So where is this pointless rambling going? If you have a kid who is just getting into baseball, or even if you just know one, do him or her a favor. Sit them down and convince them to pick this guy to be their favorite player. For almost three full months, Derrek hoisted the Cubs on his back and helped them score just enough runs to keep their heads above water. Without that superhuman effort, this team would be Pissburgh right now. But the real reason for the Cubs offensive resurgence (or maybe just surgence given the way they started) is E-ramis Ramirez.
