Careers E-MAIL ARCHIVE "What Bears They Were," a recently published hardcover book full of first-person accounts of former Chicago Bears players through the years, is full of anecdotes about the Bears' rivalry with the Green Bay Packers. Author Richard Whittingham interviewed many of the Bears' most prominent players for the 288-page work, which includes a number of terrific black-and-white photographs. The book is subtitled: "Chicago Bears Greats Talk About Their Teams, Their Coaches, And the Times of Their Lives." It is published by Triumph Books. The Packers and Bears are to play for the 164th time in the regular season (165th overall) Monday night in Champaign, Ill.

Careers E-MAIL ARCHIVE After the Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears Sunday at Lambeau Field, fans and commentators on Chicago radio expressed frustration, anger and yet more anger. As has happened in Chicago for two decades now after a loss, the conversation turned to the Bears' poor quarterback play and a call to replace the head coach. Throw in Bears offensive coordinator John Shoop and you have three punching bags for frustrated Bears observers. A caller named "Jimmy" perhaps summed up Bears fans' frustrations when he said on WGN-AM (720): "I'm ready to kick out my TV. I'm ready to kick over my Christmas tree. I'm tired to death of this crap."

Extractions: *New England - After everyone outside the AC East conceded the division title to New England prior to the start of last season the Patriots looked like a team on a mission, streaking to a 7-0 start. That was as good as life in New England was going to get, however, and the Patriots collapsed down the stretch, going 3-6 the rest of the season on their way to a disappointing 10-6 record and a seat on the couch during the playoffs. The good news is the team is still every bit as talented this year as it was last year. The bad news is the team is still incredibly young and unproven at key positions. *New York Jets - A team picked by the "experts" to finish last in the AC East. The Jets turned that into motivation to excel and finished 9-7, remaining in the playoff race to the end. The Jets coaching staff has been quick to shoot down any notion that they are pleased with last season's results and have made it quite clear that anything short of a playoff berth and at least one win against the Patriots is considered failure. The front office has been hard at work trying to bring in the players necessary to make this happen and showed they aren't afraid to make a trade if they feel it helps the team in the end. *Miami - The Dolphins were a bad team that flashed promise at times but were frustratingly inconsistent. During the last 4 weeks of the season they beat a good New England team 10-7, lost to a very poor Philadelphia team 28-26, beat eventual Super Bowl champion Buffalo 38-35, and lost to the Jets 24-12. This is a team that needed defensive help in the worst way but were unable to pass on uber-talented WR Paul Staroba with the 5th pick in the draft. Miami's offense has the potential to be one of the best in the AC. Coaches hope the defense can keep things close enough to make things interesting in the end.

Extractions: (Oct. 11, 2001) While capturing the king is the objective of any chess game, the prized possession on your opponent's side is the queen. The queen is a gem that can go in any direction on the board and is more powerful than any other piece. Every NFL team has such a piece: Some are quarterbacks, some are running backs. For the Chicago Bears , their gem is nestled in the middle of their defense. Brian Urlacher , the second-year man out of New Mexico, has not only filled the position of "dominating defender" that is a must-have on any team, but he has also helped turn the Bears from a bunch of pawns into potential kings of the NFC. Urlacher, named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 4 , registered a sack, a forced fumble, an interception, and a defensive score for the Bears against the Atlanta Falcons , clearly making the game Urlacher's best as a pro. It's the kind of play reserved for players on exceptional teams something the 2001 Bears weren't expected to be. "I think most people go off of what we did last year," says the 6-foot-3 monster. "We weren't very good in 2000. We ended the season well, but we didn't play well for 16 games.
Extractions: I realize that hundreds of thousands of fans converge on the site of the Super Bowl every year, and they're always interested in having an "inside look" at what happens during the week. There's lots of work to do, but also lots of parties and reunions of sorts. I am very fortunate in that I can partake in these kinds of things, but it wouldn't be right if I didn't share the details of my week with you. NFL Network
