Extractions: Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000 By Michael Lev, Senior editor The Cleveland Browns are on the clock. Now that the 1999 NFL season is over, our attention turns to the 2000 draft, in which the Browns have the first pick. But Couch will come to realize someday that franchise-caliber defensive ends are more valuable than elite wide receivers in the NFL. He may already be aware of it, having been sacked by numerous pass-rushing ends during his rookie season. Extractions: The guys in the trenches who block for quarterbacks and running backs may not get all the publicity, but what would football be without them? The Southeastern Conference has built a reputation over the years for producing some of the best linemen in the nation. Here are the rankings of the all-time best offensive linemen in the SEC. TOMORROW: Defensive linemen. 1. LEE ROY JORDAN, ALABAMA: Not only is Lee Roy Jordan the best offensive lineman in the history of the Southeastern Conference, but he is also the best linebacker. First Team All-America in 1962 at both center and linebacker. In the Orange Bowl (Jan. 1, 1963) against Oklahoma he had what Bud Wilkinson called the greatest football game ever played by a college football player. He graded 100% blocking at center, then made 31 unassisted tackles from his middle linebacker position. He is a member of ESPN's all-time college football team, the College Football Hall of Fame as a two-way player and the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a linebacker. All-SEC in both 1961 and 1962. Op-Ed: Even Football Players Need Guns The answer is, of course, a professional football player with a gun. lomas brown went on to warn that a disagreement on the field could turn into a gun http://www.gunowners.org/op0409.htm
Extractions: Larry Pratt Who could be more secure from attack than some hulk who plays professional football? The answer is, of course, a professional football player with a gun. This is an answer that gets the criminals' friends in the anti-self-defense chorus singing the blues. Speaking of his 19 years in the National Football League in an article in the New York Times of December 26 last year, Lomas Brown complained of having seen guns everywhere on team flights, in locker rooms, in players' cars, in dormitory rooms. Oh, the thought of it! Lomas Brown went on to warn that a disagreement on the field could turn into a gun incident. He offered no examples to prove his point, however. Parroting the Sarah Brady playbook of the virtues of defenseless victimhood, Brown said that: "I understand wanting a gun to protect your home and family. But having one in other situations is extremely dangerous. Athletes are very emotional, and just like everyone else, sometimes emotions get the best of us.... If you throw a gun into that mix, and then maybe alcohol, well, that's not good." Again, Brown provided no examples to substantiate his point. Folks like him are not in the habit of messing with facts.

The Pioneers improve to 6-3 and 5-3. The lone score of the game came in the third quarter. Widener received the ball to open the second half and moved the ball 57 yards on nine plays for a touchdown. Mike Lomas capped the drive with a 15-yard pass to Jon Steever. Frank Vinci added the point-after. In the first quarter

The Browns have the No. 1 overall draft pick again and take Penn State defensive end Courtney Brown. Arizona wide receiver Dennis Northcutt, Maryland cornerback Lewis Sanders and Michigan tight end Aaron Shea are also chosen. According to the guide, Brown started in every game in each of last three seasons in college. Romeo Crennel is hired as defensive coordinator, replacing Bob Slowik. Crennel coached the last three years with the New York Jets and coached with Palmer for four seasons in New England before that. The new wide receivers coach is Terry Robiskie, formerly with the Washington Redskins.

Extractions: Real Role Models Football Giants have 'Hometown Huddle' with kids at the Foundling By VINCENT F. IOSUE Running back Greg Comella was cheering as kids scrambled and jumped their way through an obstacle course. Down the hall, wide receiver Joe Jurevicius was painting a large sign with two young children. In another room, tight end Howard Cross was having a catch with a teenage girl standing with her walker. This was the scene Oct. 17 at the New York Foundling Hospital in Manhattan, as eight New York Giants spent their off-day playing games, signing autographs and bringing smiles to the faces of kids in the hospital's Medical Center for Pediatrics and Rehabilitation and teenagers from the Ranch/Mott Haven Prevention Program and Project Basement. These are outreaches to youngsters from upper Manhattan who may be neglected or exposed to abuse or who live in an area with a high gang population. "It's special," Jurevicius said. "Some of these kids need a little bit of motivation, some of them just need to smile. That's something simple that we can all do, no matter if you're a professional athlete or a regular working person."

Extractions: As the world ordinarily turns, it would be much too obvious for mention that the Super Bowl is the apex of a popular culture obsessed with glamour. But glamour is famously out of the question this year, and the football to be displayed is better off for it. If you're on the plane headed for Tampa this week, you already know you can be arrested for taking a lap dance at Mons Venus and the quarterbacks will be Trent Dilfer and Kerry Collins. If you're a party animal, you'll need corporate America to come up big. But if you're a football fan, you can't wait for this game. On the field, football is all about blocking and tackling. In the media, the Super Bowl is quite often about something else movie star quarterbacks, Holy Grail story lines, debuts of TV commercials, whatever extends the audience beyond football and across the popular imagination.
