In 14 NFL seasons, he played in 209 games (regular and post-season), caught 659 passes for 10,141 yards - a 15.4 yards-per-catch average and had 87 touchdowns. His best season was 1968, in which he had 61 receptions for 1037 yeards and seven touchdowns. The next year he had 54 receptions for 837 yards and 12 touchdowns. He went on to play for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 1980.

Prior to becoming a head coach at the community college level, Caviglia was the defensive line coach at Purdue University from 1991 to 1993. His career as an assistant football coach also includes stops at Ohio State, Southern California, and New Mexico State where he coached in the 1988 Rose Bowl, 1987 Florida Citrus Bowl and the 1990 Liberty Bowl.
