College Staff Meet Their Match Students at City of Wolverhampton College have undertaken a range of fundraising activities to raise money for CARP The group from the Year 2 BTEC National Diploma in Early Years decided to raise money through a series of activities, as a part of Wider Key Skills - working with others. They were put into groups and encouraged to plan their activities, arrange consent and obtain permission from a range of college employees. They also carried out their own risk assessments prior to undertaking the activities. The students chose CARP as it is a local charity that helps children at risk. They selected this charity to link into the work they complete in their second year relating to child protection. They presented the cheque to John Mcpheat from the charity whilst onboard a butty (a narrowboat) with no engine called Beth . Based in Minerva Wharf, Horseley Fields, Wolverhampton, the charity runs narrow boats trips for children and the students were given a tour of the narrow boats and told about the work that the charity does in their community.

Saturday Night NRL The darren Lockyer inspired Broncos came back from an 1810 deficit to trample on It was a gutsy performance for the Broncos with coach bennet surely http://www.thefooty.com/artman/publish/article_1234.shtml
Extractions: The Broncos escaped with a strong comeback and some touch and go decisions from the ref to beat the Raiders 24-18. Joey Johns celebrated his extended contract with the Knights be leading them to a convincing 37-18 win over the former premiership contenders Storm. The final game saw the Penny Panthers put paid to the Warriors finals hopes with an amazing 42-24 victory. Joey Johns was simply the mesmirising difference between the Knights and the Storm. He had earlier advised that he was going to play in England in the off-season and to do that he would retire from Rep Footy after next season and extended his contract with the Knights for a further two years. The Darren Lockyer inspired Broncos came back from an 18-10 deficit to trample on the Raiders hopes for season 2005. A late try was disalowed to Raider Craig Frawley, leaving the game for the Broncs. It was a gutsy performance for the Broncos with coach Bennet surely relieved that they have learnt to win ugly when needed.
The Lion Amongst The Pigeons This is certainly danger time for the Kangaroos, and coach Wayne bennet will be team for the final .and the return of darren Lockyer to the team. http://www.thefooty.com/artman/publish/article_1056.shtml
Extractions: Great Britain have certainly set a Lion amongst the Pigeons with an amazing 24-12 victory over the Kamgaroos. The loss will certainly dent the Kangaroos confidence, as well as inspiring the Pommies on the quest to win the Tri-Nations final. The Lions led 18-6 at half-time and solid scrambling defence thwarted everything the Australians threw at them in the second half to come away with the convincing win. The Australian walked away with a lucky win in their first game, and have comprehensively defeated in their second, putting the status of the Australians on the line for the first time for decades. The Australians will fine tune their performance for the final with a test against the French team, who put up a solid performance against the Kiwis this week. This is certainly danger time for the Kangaroos, and coach Wayne Bennet will be hoping for a more cohesive team for the final....and the return of Darren Lockyer to the team.

PREVIOUS EYEWITNESS UPDATE EYEWITNESS IN MANCHESTER UPDATE MONDAY 8 MARCH 1999 2100 GMT (WEEK 10) THE IRISH FESTIVAL was officially launched on Saturday night., though disappointingly, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern was unable to come over from Dublin to launch the festivities. Michael Gassey from the Irish Embassy, London, and many local personalities with Irish connections, were in attendance at the Town Hall, including Cllr Pat Karney - he's chairman of the Irish Festival steering committee - also Midland Hotel boss Shaun McCarthy and Northwest Tonight presenter Gordon Burns. This years' Irish Festival looks like being bigger and better than ever before. The climax is next Sunday's St Patrick's Day Parade, departing 12.00 from the Irish Centre on Queens Rd Cheetham Hill and proceeding via Cheetham Hill Rd, Deansgate and St Ann's Square to the Town Hall, where there'll be Irish food and lots of Guinness on tap. I'll be there! A large number of people from the Manchester area have Irish connections, including myself. My parents came here from Abbeyfeale, County Limerick in the fifties - I was born here in 1958. The topic of Irish communities in Manchester is a fascinating one - yesterday, with my mum, I went on a walking tour of the area known as "Little Ireland" - roughly the area west of Oxford St and south of Whitworth St, bounded to the south by the River Medlock. When we arrived, more than 30 people were waiting near the Salisbury pub, right. Manchester University geography specialist Mervyn Busteed's talk, illustrated by copies of old Ordnance Survey maps, was fascinating. Roast Beast Matt Lapolla (04) contributed copiously to the cornucopia with 138 yards rushing on 25 carries, 25 yards receiving on 3 catches and another 40 yards advancing a fumble for 203 total yards and all 4 touchdowns. The epitome of gridiron gluttony, Hungry- Matt then lambasted the Basters on defense with 4 tenderizing tackles that brought the Turkeys to their giblets, as savory Arif Virani (04) served hors d'oeuvres with aplomb while feasting for 84 yards on 8 completions at this Last Supper of the season. Butcher-block Sedrick Drake (03) brought some bang to the banquet with a 6-pack of tackles that chokes their first drive, and less than a minute into the game we take over and have already got a duck in the oven seven nothing. Then, like in some dinner-party-nightmare, a rat bites through an electrical cable or something makes the whole block go dark and the world-famous John Madden lights go out for half an hour, while every kid from the stands goes nuts on the field like it's a food fight. But when the lights come back on, the Jeffersonians have an aching void in their bellies that won't subside until they slurp up not one but (gulp!) two unanswered touchdowns for a big fat 14 -7 halftime lead.

Extractions: « May 2005 Main July 2005 » Denver's new school superintendent , Michael Bennet, formerly the mayor's chief of staff is "incredibly smart" with "strong community relationships, but no K-12 experience, and not much background in the education wars," writes Rocky Mountain News columnist Linda Seebach in an e-mail. Bennet says his first priority will be hiring a chief academic officer to develop education policy. Seebach asks: How should he go about filling this critical position? I'd recommend consulting with the folks at Education Trust , which has a no-nonsense attitude toward raising the achievement of disadvantaged students. He also should consult Zig Engelmann, of Direct Instruction fame, or, at least, readi Engelmann's response to a column by Alan Bersin, outgoing superintendent in San Diego. Bersin, an attorney who also came in with little education experience, argued in a column that a superintendent must change the paradign to make productivity the top priority. Bersin "talks about focus on productivity, but nothing he says gives the slightest clue that he knows much about achieving it," Engelmann writes.
