Extractions: August 9, 2005 Long before he played for the Dallas Cowboys, long before his four years as a starter at Tennessee and long before Herschel Walker turned him into a speed bump on his first touchdown run at Georgia, Bill Bates was just another kid whose helmet looked a little too big. Doug McQueen was the biggest, baddest sixth-grade football player around. Doug McQueen was the speed bump. "Doug was always bigger than the rest of us when we were kids," said Stan Cotten, the radio voice of Wake Forest football, basketball and baseball, and one of Bates' best friends growing up. "You just didn't want to tackle him." The memories are vague at best, but Cotten isn't the only one who recalls that day at practice when Bates stepped forward in his Cedar Bluff Farragut Optimist football uniform and announced his presence with the type of hit that would become his calling card during a 15-year NFL career. McQueen took the handoff and Bates deposited him on his backside with perhaps his first recorded "slobberknocker" - longtime Farragut teacher and coach Bobby Henry's word for a Bates hit, a hit that, well, knocks the slobber out of the person on the receiving end.

A biology major at Bates with a minor in chemistry, Jack Keigwin was a member of the state champion football and track teams, a laboratory assistant, and proctor of Smith Hall. After graduating with honors, he joined a major chemical company as a technical representative. Jack soon realized that corporate America was not his calling, and he elected to earn his M.B.A., which he did with distinction from Harvard University. He teamed with a fellow entrepreneur in a start-up packaging company, became president, and grew the business rapidly. After this business was sold, Jack sought new challenges abroad, starting a yacht manufacturing enterprise in Hamburg, Germany. This business was also subsequently sold, and upon his return to America he purchased a dormant family construction business. Jack and his wife, Beverly, have built this business into one of the larger and more successful real estate development companies in southern New England.

Extractions: HOME NFL MLB NBA ... Fantasy Mall Draft strategy: Coaching changes Story Tools: Print Email Gregg Rosenthal Posted: 71 days ago Beneath the violent surface, football always has been our most cerebral sport. It's a coach's game. Today's "Belichick and Reid" NFL is increasingly complex in its schemes and deception. It makes sense, then, that coaches have more effect on fantasy value in football than in any sport. Astute fantasy owners know that coaching changes bring about dramatic turns in fantasy fortune. Only three teams changed head coaches this offseason, but a slew of coordinators were axed. We've highlighted the teams undergoing the most significant changes and how it will impact fantasy value for the 2005 season. Miami Dolphins - Nick Saban, Head Coach; Scott Linehan, Offensive Coordinator; Richard Smith, Defensive Coordinator The Belichick coaching tree is taking over. Dry-witted leaders with a love for scheming and distaste for disclosing injuries are sprouting up like Home Depots. Belichick has long spoken about Nick Saban being his closest and brightest friend in the coaching fraternity. Saban's defining traits are similar to the hooded one. He makes his money on defense based on size, smarts and versatility. Look for the Dolphins' running game to play a larger role under new head coach Nick Saban.
