The franchise long has taken a somewhat casual approach to the position, which is merely the most important one on the field. Charlie Batch has visited Tampa Bay and Jasksonville, but he remains the best fit to be the Steelers' No. 2 quarterback when the 2003 season begins in September (Matt Freed, Post-Gazette) Although Kordell Stewart was in place at quarterback for the better part of six seasons, they never developed a young quarterback to succeed him, never came close. That was largely because the team never saw fit to use a high-draft choice on a quarterback. Since 1991, the Steelers have drafted only five quarterbacks. Only Stewart was taken in the first four rounds. The need for depth at quarterback is more important now than it has been at any time in Bill Cowher's tenure. Although the Steelers don't readily admit this, they're moving away from the run-oriented offense that has been their trademark since Cowher became coach in 1992 to one that utilizes more passing.
